Anne Boswell As one of the key players in New Zealand’s agricultural manufacturing sector, Hastings company Landquip maintains strong ties with its customers – the agricultural community. It is because of this connection that Landquip has been able to offer New Zealand farmers an everevolving range of agricultural equipment that makes everyday life on the farm easier and more efficient. The business came into the Fyfe family’s hands in 1995, when engineer Garth Fyfe purchased the business. And with Garth’s sons Tom and Jacob joining the team, it remains a family business at heart. From humble beginnings producing steel ladders for the Hawke’s Bay’s orchard industry, today Landquip has a significant product offering, manufactured at its purpose-built manufacturing facility in Hastings. The facility, constructed in 2007, allowed the company to streamline production and increase capacity. In addition to the second iteration of their original product – Allite ladders – Landquip produces or supplies mowers, bin handlers, pruning sweeps, grape gondolas, forklifts and rollers to the horticulture and viticulture industries; Porta Yards, Endura Yards, Permanent Yards, loading ramps and CrateSafe safety screens to the sheep industry; and tyre rollers, quad bike roll bars and mowers to the dairy industry. At the 2024 Fieldays, Landquip received strong interest in its goal to develop an innovative solution for maintaining dairy race ways. Integral to the movement of dairy cows, farm workers and machinery around the farm, race way maintenance is paramount to a successful dairy operation. A good raceway has a slight crown in the centre that slopes away on both sides, allowing water to drain away to prevent the formation of mud and holes. Over time, cow movement results in a build-up of material at the side of the race. Landquip brainstormed a solution that would replace the traditional excavator and truck and trailer material removal and four months later, it launched the LaneRotr R1 – a cutting edge machine now sold across New Zealand. Mounted on a front-end loader, the LaneRotr R1 quickly removes the soil and grass build-ups along the edges of races to restore drainage, leading to a drier surface and a reduction in lameness. At a speed of 1.5km/hour, farmers can clear race ways quickly and efficiently, at a fraction of the cost of the traditional method. Landquip has one main goal: to provide New Zealand’s best sheep handling and farming equipment. Innovation is at the heart of everything they do, driving them to continually improve and innovate and remain at the cutting edge of farming technology.
