Kelly Deeks Providing a comprehensive range of specialised services for farmers across the Bay of Plenty, Specialised Rural Services is more than just a fencing company, with owner Scott Graham and his team understanding the unique challenges of the region and tailoring top quality earthmoving and construction solutions with precision and efficiency. Covering a wide area from its headquarters in Galatea, Whakatane, through to Taupo and Rotorua, Specialist Rural Services provides fencing, earthmoving, and construction solutions on all types of farms and all types of country with a focus on strong workmanship, communication, health and safety, and time management. Scott is a qualifed carpenter who has been fencing for more than 17 years. As well as working on the full range of rural fencing, Scott has also gained experience in building sheds and cattle yards, installing water troughs and water lines, bulldozing fence lines and tracks, and contouring land. “With my background in building I’m pretty handy, and as an experienced farm contractor we know how to deliver a professional, tidy, and cost-efficient job,” he says. “It’s a challenging and physically demanding industry, but we love being out in the countryside and having the satisfaction of a job well done and a happy client.” Scott has put his two team members through the New Zealand Certificate in Fencing (Level 3) while he holds the Level 4 qualification and is now working towards becoming a Fencing Contractors Association New Zealand (FCANZ) Accredited Fencing Contractor. RURAL SERVICES » Specialist Rural Services Only available to established businesses, FCANZ Accreditation would mean Specialist Rural Services models industry and business best practice in all facets of the company, including quality of workmanship, health and safety behaviours, and management of employees and sub-contractors. As an FCANZ member and with qualifications under their belt, Specialist Rural Services is an attractive option for Council and Government projects. Currently finishing a 10km wallaby fence for Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Scott sees the value of FCANZ Accreditation for picking up more of these nice lengthy projects. “Accreditation is going to lend more weight to our tenders,” he says. “We might not be the cheapest, but we’ve got the track record and the competency to build professional and quality fences.” Specialist Rural Services has remained in hot demand through the current downturn but it has had an impact on the working week. Big capital works aren’t really happening while the small but necessary jobs still are, so Scott is spending more time pricing and administrating multiple projects every week. His wife Laura has returned to the workforce and is now teaching at the local school two days a week, so their three-year-old daughter spends Mondays and Tuesdays at work with Dad. “Those are my days to go out quoting. Aria is a pretty good workmate, she’s starting to recognise all the farms we’ve visited and the places we’ve been working. As long as you’ve got a packet of wine gums she’s pretty good.” Laura meanwhile remains a huge support for Specialist Rural Services, and as chief financial officer she makes sure those who need paying are paid.
