Russell Fredric A buoyant rural economy that even includes cautious hope for wool is cause for optimism, Rick Powdrell says. “The outlook is quite positive and I suppose the thing that gives me real confidence is that schedules for both beef and lamb and mutton started high but they haven’t tailed off dramatically. “Since the lamb schedule opened it hasn’t dropped a lot which I think is very positive, and the same with the beef. To me, that’s a really good sign. It’s nice to see wool value moving in a positive direction.” A former Federated Farmers meat and fibre chairman, Rick is currently a board member for The Campaign for Wool New Zealand. Initiated in 2010 by King Charles III, when he was Prince of Wales, The Campaign for Wool (CFW) is a global endeavour raising awareness among consumers about the natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits offered by wool, along with encouraging collaboration between a diverse community of stakeholders from growers to designers and retailers. A New Zealand-bred initiative, Wool Alliance, a collaboration between Wool Impact, Campaign for Wool New Zealand, Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand, and Beef and Lamb New Zealand aims to build a new model to revitalise New Zealand’s strong wool sector. “There’s a lot of serious discussion around how we’re going to go forward as an industry in a more united approach; you look at PGG Wrightson and Wools of New Zealand looking at how they can do their logistics together,” Rick says.
