Karen Phelps RURAL PEOPLE » Rosemount Charolais 2026 will mark the fourth sale for Rosemount Charolais, a stud husband and wife team Kurt and Katie-Rose Parry have built from the ground up. Kurt says there has been growing demand for Charolais from both the dairy and beef industries. “Our stud has been going from strength to strength and also Charolais as a breed,” he says.“I think people have recognised the increased yields and faster turnaround in fattening cattle by crossing their animals to a Charolais sire. For the dairy industry, using a Charolais bull can add value to their calves so they can head into the beef system rather than being a bobby calf.” The couple, who sharemilk 500 cows on the coast in Hawera, are first and foremost dairy farmers and this has helped inform their approach to Rosemount Charolais stud, founded in 2018, which now has 80 registered breeding cows with 30 Charolais yearling bulls slated for sale this September. The couple’s breeding programme focuses on producing bulls they would be happy to use themselves over their own cattle. “In our breeding programme we’re looking for short gestation and calving ease but also sound structure and good growth rates. We have also started heading down the homozygous polled route as demand for polled genetics increases due to animal welfare considerations. We use our own Charolais semen to tail off our Friesian cows. That’s how it all started for us, to be able to produce a bull for our own needs. And our motto continues to be to breed something we would be happy to use ourselves. We get really good results out of our bulls in our own dairy herd.” The couple run their stud from a 100ha block in Hawera, with sires from Silversteam and Hemingford studs forming the base of the genetics building their herd. As members of Charolais Breeders NZ, Kurt and Katie are committed to improving and promoting the breed. The couple are very much a team, working together on their dairy and stud businesses. Rosemount Charolais will hold its on-farm sale on 29th September. Last year saw a full clearance, with prices trending upwards. Kurt says the bulls on offer this year are likely the best line-up so far: “They are predominantly polled and, because of the excellent grass growing season, the bulls are looking great. The sale is always nerve-wracking, you put yourself on display. It’s very humbling to have built a stud from nothing to be presenting fantastic bulls to clients that we can be proud of. It’s a lot of different emotions. We are getting repeat buyers every year which is really great to see.
