Karen Phelps RURAL PEOPLE » Pukemiro Station Pukemiro Station, a 1000-hectare mixed breeding and finishing property near Dannevirke, is expanding its facilities and cadetship programme as interest in agricultural careers continues to grow. The station, home to 4,500 Romney breeding ewes and 200 Angus cows, has recently completed significant upgrades including refurbished shearers’ quarters now serving as guest accommodation, a new classroom, a farm office and a smoko room. “This means it’s a great facility for our own cadets and for their families to come to stay when they visit. We also want to open up the farm to more educational and community groups,” says farm manager Sam Mann. The improvements are designed to provide a versatile learning environment and Sam says that while the new classroom is used for tutoring cadets on Thursdays and Fridays the station is keen to see other groups utilise it. “It doesn’t have to be farm related. It could be a rugby team who might want to come for a night away for team bonding, or a school group or a horse trekking group who might want to trek here. It would be free of charge. We’re open to a variety of approaches from groups and will see what happens. For us it’s about sharing our assets.” The cadetship programme itself is now in its eighth year and remains highly selective, taking just three cadets per year. Applications open during the station’s mid-June open day, giving prospective cadets a chance to explore the farm and see what the two-year programme offers. When selecting cadets, Sam looks for three key qualities: keenness and wanting to learn, initiative and teamwork. “The calibre of keen young people just keeps getting better so making the final selection of three cadets is always a challenge. The cadetship is growing in popularity as more people hear about it.
