Centrally located in the Mangakahia Valley, Vuletich Contracting supports the region’s farmers with cultivation, drilling, spraying, baling, bulk silage harvesting, fencing, planting, haymaking and supplementary feed supplies. Last spring got off to a slow start in Northland, but the region soon made up for lost time with bumper grass growth keeping the tractors busy into summer. “I’d like to thank our fantastic team for the effort, dedication and care they put into doing top quality work, job after job,” says Eden Vuletich, who owns and operates the business with his parents, Warren and Diane. “ We all put a lot of effort in during peak season. Dad’s in the workshop keeping maintenance under control, while Mum’s running around making sure everyone’s well fed and looked after. Our goal is to get the job done but not to have anyone overdoing it. We have enough staff to give time off when needed. We ask a lot of our team during the year but try to be as flexible as we can.” Eden says a highlight of the latest grass silage season was seeing a big uptake in the use of silage inoculants by local farmers. Together with Nutritech’s Nick Waihi, Vuletich Contracting has been working hard to spread the word on the benefits of using inoculants to preserve silage quality and reduce losses. With the main grass silage work done by Christmas, Vuletich Contracting switched focus to cutting hay, roading and fencing jobs through January. As this edition goes to print, the team will be busy with the maize harvest season. Vuletich Contracting has progressively purchased and leased pockets of land through the years to produce supplementary feed for farmers and will also be working directly with farmers on maize through the harvest season. “Everything flows from one season to the next. Over winter, we do the majority of repairs and maintenance inhouse and have a good workshop team working alongside Dad to make sure everything is set and ready to go for the new season ahead.” Last spring got off to a slow start in Northland, but the region soon made up for lost time. A third such baler has been ordered, with a leased baler used in the interim. “The technology means we’re using a plastic film for baling and wrapping that goes to the recycling programme for farmers – a real improvement on traditional bale netting.” Meanwhile, Eden regularly posts about his rural contracting journey on social media to promote the industry and to highlight opportunities available for keen young people looking for a fulfilling pathway in the rural sector.
