Battensby Brothers Contracting has bullock power. The animals have been specially trained by Battensby Brothers Contracting owner Ross (better known as ‘Scooter’) Battensby to tow a sledge to get posts and equipment to places on a farm that are not accessible when the ground gets too wet. They know the commands ‘come to’, ‘go forth’ and ‘come in’ and ‘get over’, and their skills even saw them play a part in The Hobbit movie. It’s just one way Battensby Brothers Contracting thinks outside the square to get the job done for farmers. Based in Ararua, Northland, the company is run by Scooter and brother Glenn who grew up on a dairy farm in the local area. Together they now offer over 50 years of experience and have an in-depth knowledge of the challenges faced by local farmers. The wide range of services offered by Battensby Brothers Contracting include ground cultivation, muck spreading, raking, mulching and rotary slashing, fencing, hay and silage, hay bales, silage bales/ stack and rewood delivery. The aim is always to help farmers save time and money. For example the muck spreading service helps farmers to save on their fertiliser bills by making the most out of the ef uent on their farms. The West muck spreader can spread slurry, compost, cow manure from yards and feed pads, solid dung, stock bedding and poultry manure and old silage among other things. Both Glenn and Scooter are hands on in their business. Glenn describes himself and an organizer, in charge of the day to day running of the operation. Scooter is in charge of the workshop. Both get out on the equipment as needed. Glenn’s partner Cherie Delautour is the company’s of ce manager and also delivers hay and rewood and helps out on site with the fencing. She is about to learn to drive a tractor. Scooter’s wife Kate also helps to split rewood, does deliveries and will help Scooter on weekends with jobs. Employee Frank Mannes has been with the business a long time, offers a great deal of experience and his reliability is exceptional. Heath Geraghty has recently joined the team with a lot of experience behind him also. Glenn says they realise the importance of running their business professionally to meet the needs of the modern farmer and are constantly investing in equipment with a new spreader and post banger bought earlier this year. The clever brothers are even restoring a 1982 MC Mack truck at the moment, which will shortly be out on the job. “We always aim to keep up with the latest technology to offer our clients an even better service,” says Glenn. All of this ensures reliability and that Battensby Brothers Contracting can get the job done when it says it will and increases ef ciency so farmers get a timely service and high quality result. This investment in plant is supported by the brothers undertaking a lot of their own maintenance and servicing requirements to make sure all equipment is in top condition and ready to perform. The company has both a website and Facebook page up so customers can keep up to date with what’s happening. Because Battensby Brothers Contracting has been in the game for so long most work is for regular clients with new clients coming by word of mouth.
