Farmers end up building relationships with individual vets that they like to deal with. Those relationships can be very strong and, many of our clients and vets end up being good mates.” The company’s roots go right back to 1947, and a veterinary relationship with the Central Hawke’s Bay (CHB) Farmers Club. But it wasn’t till 1974 that Vet Services Hawke’s Bay was formally established, contracted to provide veterinary services to CHB Farmers Club members — a strong relationship that continues to thrive. Locally owned by a number of vets and non-vets working in the business, Vet Services Hawke’s Bay provides a diverse range of veterinary care from Tutira right down to Norsewood, with clinics in Hastings, Napier and Waipukurau. “As a truly mixed practice we care for pets, and horses, and service sheep, beef, dairy, and deer farms. Our production animal vets and rural technicians are hugely experienced and up-to-date with the latest technology and procedures.” Across its three clinics, Vet Services Hawke’s Bay employs a talented team of full, part-time and casual staff, including 34 Veterinarians, over 24 Vet Nurses, 5 Large Animal Technicians, 2 Groomers, 6 Retail Staff and 21 Support Staff. “We place an emphasis on a workplace culture of happiness and team work to create a work environment that’s fun, productive and successful,” says Brendan. “As a team, we’re very focused on preventative medicine and consultancy services and enjoy working with a loyal and proactive client base. There’s a great depth of knowledge amongst our small animal vets and an excellent team of nurses and support staff. Our case-loads include a wide range surgical and general medicine including orthopaedics and canine reproductive work.” The Hastings and Waipukurau clinics are both BESTPRACTICE® accredited and wellequipped for all aspects of small animal medical care and surgery. In 2019 Vet Services launched an equine focused veterinary service called VS Equine. The combined skills and knowledge of six equine veterinarians and three technicians provide a comprehensive service for both the horse and our clients bene t. Enjoying continued growth, Vet Services has two exciting building projects underway including the expansion of its existing clinic in Waipukurau, which is owned by the CHB Farmers Club. “We had outgrown the clinic and approached CHB Farmers Club with what we needed in terms of space and design. They agreed to fund it, but asked us to take a lead role in managing the project, so it was a massive degree of mutual trust. We started the Napier clinic from nothing in 2012 and it has grown very quickly. We will be moving into a brand new purpose-built clinic triple the size of the current premises, so that we can continue delivering the services with an expanding client base.” The success of Vet Services Hawke’s Bay has been about the relationships it has forged, but at the heart of the business is a team culture built on looking after those relationships and unyielding care of animals.
