The Far North contractor, who owns and operates MAW Ltd, first learned the ropes by heading out on the family farm and getting stuck in with jobs like mulching, spreading and feeding out. “I’ve been driving tractors since I was 10, so it was an easy decision for me to take up ag contracting work when I left school.” Within a few years, Vince had launched his own ag contracting business. Substantial investment over the past 15 years has seen him build an impressive array of modern machinery and equipment. Clients in the Kaitaia area and throughout the Far North know they can rely on Vince and his team to provide a top-class service. The line-up today includes six tractors, a new Volvo FM 500 tip truck, a truck spreader, a 13-tonne digger with mulching head for drainage work, a forage harvester, plus an array of specialist baling and cultivation equipment. “We’ve just put up a new 430sqm shed to keep everything covered. Given the current environment, gear is getting harder to come by and we want to ensure that what we have is in best condition. We are doing more maintenance in-house now too, as a way to further guarantee reliability.” Employing a team of eight staff, Vince is a great advocate of leading by example and working hard alongside his staff. He says it’s the best way to boost team morale and win respect from his employees. www.agpac.co.nz MAW Ltd Long standing supplier of crop baling solutions to Given the current environment, gear is getting harder to come by. “I really do believe in leading from the front.” Services provided by MAW Ltd in Kaitaia and the far north region include hay, baleage, cultivation, bulk silage, maize and grass requirements, as well as meeting farmers’ digger and spreading needs. The team is also available for tree and scrub clearance, drainage, roadworks and driveways. Vince says the new Volvo FM 500 truck, which went on the road for MAW Ltd the first time in June 2022, is a great asset and he’s excited about the business opportunities it will bring. “We’re using it for general cartage now. What’s really good is that we now have the convenience of being able to use our own truck to supply our three tractor spreaders and our truck spreader with fertiliser and lime. That flows through into the service we can provide farmers because we can deliver that spreading service without any threat of disruption due to delivery hold-ups.” Managing accounts and administration for the family business is Vince’s wife Nara. While the long hours inevitably mean that Vince sometimes misses out on family time with Ella, 16, Sophie, 6 and James, 2, the hard work brings its own rewards - a successful business that serves the region well. Vince loves trying his hand at new projects that come along, such as planting peanuts last spring for an MPI trial. “You never know where these things might lead and I’m always interested in trying out new ventures.” Winter is a slightly quieter time for the team, with demand poised to soar again from the end of September as the spring season gains pace.
