Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Golden Grain Ltd North Island company Golden Grain is a good example of how buying local helps support New Zealand farmers. It sources most of the grains for its products from New Zealand growers and so farmers in particular who purchase Golden Grain feed are helping to support their fellow farmers and they can also rest assured that no GE grain has been used, says David Bryson who owns the company with wife Tanya. Golden Grain was started nearly 50 years ago by David’s parents Garry and Liz who had a dream and passion for locally grown maize, providing high quality products at low prices and with local farmers and their livestock in mind. Now David and Tanya are continuing the tradition, taking over the company on the night of the first Covid-19 lockdown. “We’ve had quite a bit to deal with in our short time of owning the company,” says David with a laugh. Growing up around Golden Grains no doubt helped David navigate the business through uncertain times and the company has continued to thrive. Based on the outskirts of Edgecumbe, Golden Grain supplies stock food and grain for a variety of animals including chickens, horses, pigs, calves, goats, rabbits and sheep. The business can also make up custom mixes to suit specific needs. Golden Grain also grows, harvest and dries maize, wheat, barley and oats on the 40ha family farm and 40ha, which the company leases. The company supplies palm kernel and oyster grit for poultry. “We endeavour to provide an affordable stock food with high quality and good service. We also have the ability to bring in other products if needed. We can provide pick up on site as well as deliveries both locally and further afield. We can also deliver bulk in truck or auger truck,” says David. He says in particular chicken feed sales have increased as people are increasingly having a few chooks at home now that egg prices have risen. A new product is a chick starter mix for baby chickens that was released a year ago and Golden Grain is about to release a pullet grower mix. Both David and Tanya are hands on and fully involved in the business meaning a personal service for clients, some of whom have been using the company’s products for generations. “Alongside one staff member we do everything ourselves from bagging to mixing so we see exactly what is happening every day,” says David. “If people want to know anything they can come talk to us direct.” Since taking over the Brysons have upgraded equipment and introduced an automated bagging plant to meet demand. Products are processed on site at the company feed mill, which house mixers, grain silos and dryers. Golden Grain products are sold direct by phoning or coming in to 566 Westbank Road, Edgecumbe.
