Russell Fredric Participating in a Beef + Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) Hub Farm programme is helping Ohineiti Station achieve measurable production gains while sharing practical insights with the wider sheep and beef industry. Owned by Bevan and Mary Proffit, the Kakatahi Class 3 hill-country property northwest of Whanganui comprises 1,424 hectares of owned land and a further 540ha under lease. The station carries about 13,000 stock units, with a breeding system based around 6,800 Perendale ewes and 510 breeding cows across steep terrain ranging from 80 metres to 540 metres above sea level. Since becoming a BLNZ Hub Farm last year, the station has taken on a wider role as a demonstration farm where commercial decisions, performance data and practical outcomes are openly shared with other sheep and beef farmers. Bevan says putting the station forward coincided with a period when the business itself was ready to lift performance. “We’d been doing some development here, but I was just wanting to look at capital fertiliser and improve performance on farm. It was a bit of a perfect storm for me to put my hand up because I wanted to change a few things in our business anyway.
