Alexia Anderson Facial eczema and internal parasite challenges remain evident for some farmers, prompting the need for greater resilience across flocks. Rangiora Trust is doing its bit to address those issues, thanks to genetics behind its Longview Perendale Stud, which have a proven track record for tolerance. Based in Tutira, in Hawkes Bay, Rangiora Trust’s breeding programme is helping commercial farmers meet those challenges while maintaining productivity. The Longview Perendale Stud has built its reputation on breeding sheep that perform where it matters most. General manager Ashleigh Coppoolse says the breeding programme places equal emphasis on fertility, survival, wool production, muscle development and meat yield, ensuring buyers receive well-rounded genetics, rather than focusing on a single trait. Those priorities have remained consistent over the years. “The facial and worm burden problems are not going away anytime soon.” She says those problems have always been a part of the Longview Perendale key priorities, led by long-time manager Graeme Maxwell. Ashleigh credits Graeme’s commitment, having spent the past 30 years working with the WormFEC programme and the past 12 years advancing the stud’s facial eczema breeding programme. The ram must be a twin and the dam has to have three lambs in two years then, going forward, if she has two singles in a row she is retired from the stud flock,” she says. “They also have to [have] good data spread across the page that we know we will be gaining from putting it back into, not only the stud flock, but also the commercial.” Performance data is assessed using the NProve genetic evaluation system, giving buyers access to regularly updated breeding information and greater confidence in the genetics they are purchasing. However, Ashleigh believes figures alone are never enough. She says while you can have all the data in the world, you still have to look at the animal and like what you see. The stud puts its own genetics to work within its commercial flock, allowing the team to see firsthand how breeding decisions perform under farming conditions. “Clients have reported back after introducing our rams for the last five years [that] they have noticed a significant change in their facial eczema and worm tolerance.” Tat feedback is important, Ashleigh says. “We always love hearing feedback from our clients as it helps us with improvements within the flock.” With ongoing support from organisations and programmes, including SIL, Genetic Gains, GenomNZ and Techion’s WormFEC testing, Ashleigh is confident the breeding programme will continue adapting as new traits and genetic technologies develop.
