| 53 Tangiteroria Transport still growing The business carries a wide range of rural freight, including fertiliser, metal, hay and PK throughout the local area. A drop side truck has also enabled the company to transport large hay bales and bags of fertiliser for farmers. Kelly Deeks A transport business established by Ambie and Jan Beatty to fill a service gap in rural Kaipara is continuing to grow, with Tangiteroria Transport adapting to rising fuel costs while providing the reliable local carrier service farmers and contractors depend on. Jan Beatty says the business was launched six years ago when the loss of the area›s only local carrier left residents without a local trucking firm between Dargaville, Whangarei, and surrounding districts. “We are halfway between Dargaville and Whangarei and there was no other operator here,” Jan says. “Because we were farmers ourselves, we knew what we needed from a local carrier company, and we knew plenty of other people needed the same thing.” Jan and her husband Ambie originally planned to give the business five years to prove itself. Instead, demand has steadily increased, allowing the company to expand from a single truck to a fleet of three, although one older vehicle is now due for replacement. Today the business carries a wide range of rural freight, including fertiliser, metal, hay and PK throughout the local area. A drop side truck has also enabled the company to transport large hay bales and bags of fertilizer for farmers. The next step is investing in a larger truck capable of carrying 12 tonne loads, allowing the business to better meet demand for fertiliser and bulk products. “That is where we would like to head next because a lot of the fertiliser and pk loads are 12 tonnes,” Jan says. The transport business has also provided an opportunity for Ambie to step back from the couple’s dairy farm, where their son is now 50/50 share milking. “He needed something else to do and Ambie has always enjoyed driving trucks, so it has worked out perfectly. It has given him the chance to get off the farm and let the next generation take over.” While the transport side of the business has grown steadily, Jan says rising fuel prices have created fresh challenges, forcing operators to carefully review freight charges while remaining fair to customers. “Fuel has meant we have had to put our prices up, and it is difficult to know exactly where they should sit.” RURAL SERVICES » Tangiteroria Transport PREMIUMAGGREGATESWITH SUSTAINABLE MININGMETHODS Specialising in Premium aggregates (meeting NZTA and WDC standards ), Brown Rock and Fill Material WhyChoose Our Brown Rock? • HighQuality: Durable and reliable for construction, landscaping, and as a material for farm tracks and driveways. She credits experienced transport operators, including family members and industry contacts, with helping her to the understand pricing and operating costs calculations. “When we first started, some of the other truckies would tell me to think of a number and double it! We have been fortunate to get advice from people with years of experience and that has made a huge difference.” Jan says paperwork and compliance remain one of the biggest parts of running a transport company, from calculating kilometres to ensuring pricing reflects operating costs. The business is supported by relief drivers who help during busy periods, allowing Tangiteroria Transport to remain flexible as seasonal demand changes. Jan says the company’s success comes down to the loyalty of local customers. “We have been incredibly lucky with the support we have received over the past six years. Our customers are fantastic, they give us plenty of notice, and they have backed us from the beginning.” “It is because of that support that we have been able to keep growing, and we are very grateful for it.” Working! 104 Jervois Street, Dargaville Keeping e West 0272139665 | ella@westcoastservices.co.nz
