Pukemiro Station Cadetship is a two year programme focused both hands-on and academic training, with cadets living on site in their own cot- tage throughout the duration of their training. Farm manager Mark Heaphy says the pro- gramme starts from first base with cadets learning cooking, keeping their living quarters, time manage- ment, goal setting and leadership. Practical on-farm training in the day-to-day operations of the station includes stockmanship, fencing, animal husbandry, feed management and farm technology, among others, in a busy fully com- mercial operation. Located near Dannevirke, the 930 effective hec- tare station has four staff including Mark, working directly with the cadets, plus a tutor for one day a week. Another property, Otawa, comprising 700ha 30 minutes south east of Pukemiro, is also under the umbrella of Pukemiro Station Cadetship While the cadetship is farm-based, the training and experience gained is a good springboard for working in any area of agriculture or to undertake further tertiary education, Mark says. The cadetship was the vision of Don Williams who formed ADB Williams Trust and gifted the sta- tion to the trust before he died in 1983.
