Business Rural North Summer 2022

| 15 Ben has put a lot of time and thinking into how next evolve the farm, which at 2,500ha of mainly steep and steeper terrain, brings its fair share of challenges. RURAL PEOPLE » Collier Farm TAML Forestry, formally known as Tree Awareness Limited, is proud to be associated with the Collier family since 1980. When founder Morris Fisher irst met with Keith and Bev Collier, Keith asked Morris to come out to the farm to undertake some pruning on one of the forestry blocks. Morris recalls walking with Keith for a lengthy amount of time thinking to himself, “Where is this small block?”. Eventually over a couple of ridges and through a couple of gullies, this block of pine trees appeared. It was no small block and Morris suddenly realised “wow, I’m going to need some help on this one.” Armed with only one pair of pruners and a jack saw it certainly was not going to be enough. And from that day forward, the relationship between Morris and the Colliers was formed. Fast forward a few years, Cam and Sarah Collier eventually took over the farm from Keith and Bev. Morris and Cam had discussed planting more forests on the farm, to which a forestry Joint Ventures was set up and expanded the investment in forestry. Over the years Morris has had the privilege of managing the forests and undertaking the silviculture of these newly established forests through to maturity. TAML Forestry & Collier Farm: Together over three generations Unfortunately, with the sudden death of Cam Collier, son Ben Collier and family moved back to the farm to take over and assist mum Sarah. Over the last 5 years many of the forests compartments Morris planted, pruned, thinned, and managed for the Collier family have been harvested. Now replanted and like that day in 1980, pruning has begun on the second rotation of trees. Along with the replanting, establishment of new plantings on the Collier Farm have been taking place the total area of managed forest as well as the relationship continues to grow. Morris remains active as a partner in TAML Forestry and continues to enjoy going out to the farm to check on the trees. While the younger generations are now starting to take over, there are few forest managers within New Zealand that have enjoyed and had the privilege of working for a client over three generations. Morris Fisher and the rest of TAML Forestry team would like congratulate Sarah, Ben, and the rest of the family at Collier Farm on their farming success now and into the future. We look forward to continuing to work with the Collier family into the future and the generations to come.
