Tracey Edwardes RURAL PEOPLE » Turihaua Angus The Turihaua Angus Spring Bull Sale was held on the original site of the oldest registered Angus Stud farm in Australasia. “We are thrilled with the result, and it was rewarding that all of our clients got the bulls they were after,” says fifth-generation owner Paul Williams. “There was something there for everyone.” The auction’s nine two-year old bulls, and 26 yearlings, sold for an average of around $6,500, with one yearling fetching the top price of $14,000. With 116 years experience in Angus breeding, Turihaua Angus is a valued and successful breeding operation with high client success and a renowned positive reputation. Paul says Angus have the best performance and constitution to thrive in the East Coast’s rugged environment. Needing more bulls and a better selection of genetics, his forbears purchased the land in 1897 and registered the first Angus females in 1906. “In the early days all bulls bred were used on farms owned and leased by the family, now there is sufficient demand to sell two-year-old bulls and yearlings. All the bulls are backed by our three-year guarantee for structural soundness and fertility.” Paul and his wife Sarah, who have three young sons, operate Turihaua Station’s 1000 hectares. His parents, Hamish and Angela, still help with the breeding operation, which includes tagging and weighing 400 calves each year, made up of 250 MA cows, 100 R2 heifers and 50 embryos. “We allow the environment to dictate our decision-making around our genetics. We create an animal that thrives here.
