Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Reymer Ag Contracting Third generation family business Reymer Ag Contracting continues to provide a high quality, sustainable approach to agricultural services for farmers in the greater Waipa District of the Waikato, customising services to meet the needs of its clients, and using reliable machinery with the latest technology to improve on-farm economics. Now owned and operated by Mike and Chris Reymer, the business was started by their grandfather John in the 1960s, and taken over by their dad Bill in the 1970s. Both John and Bill were innovative contractors of their time. John was one of the first in New Zealand to use Massey Ferguson tractors and he had the country’s first loader wagon, and Bill introduced his customers to new methods like direct drilling and undersowing. Mike and Chris have grown up with machinery and farming in their blood, and in the past 10 years they have expanded operations at Reymer Ag to cover the full range of services from spraying out to harvest, as is the company motto - from seed to feed. Mike and Chris invest heavily in technology to stay at the forefront of the industry and provide the services their clients need. With nitrogen caps now imposed and the cost of some fertiliser products rising as much as 25% this year alone, more and more customers are choosing liquid fertilisers to retain their yields using less fertiliser, with more accuracy and less wastage. Reymer Ag has invested in a Tow and Fert multi 4000 from local engineering firm Metalform Industries for a faster and easier way of mixing and applying liquid fertiliser right there in the paddock. “We use this predominantly for urea but as farmers become more biologically aware, we are also it for an increasing amount of fish and seaweed and all sorts of trace elements,” Chris says. “We offer a range of services where we have alternative ways of doing them.” Such as tube wrapped bales as well as individual bales. Tube wrapped bales can bring a number of advantages including a considerable saving of bale wrap plastic and higher quality baleage that is easier and safer to feed out. As farmers look to maintain soil structure and quality and save on cultivation costs, Reymer Ag has added strip tillage to its services this year, where only a narrow row of seed bed is tilled, with the area between the rows left undisturbed. Reymer Ag has developed its own best practice and invested machinery that is capable of providing a more sustainable approach to farming. “Our maize planter can be quickly readjusted to plant maize direct into sprayed off pasture, and our direct drill places fertiliser in between the seed rows to eliminate the need for cross drilling.” Like John and Bill, Mike and Chris are big fans of the Massey Ferguson brand and these make up the majority of the fleet. In recent years, Reymer Ag has added four Fendt tractors to the fleet, another AGCO brand with a superior, fuel efficient transmission that adds to Reymer Ag’s operational efficiency. Reymer Ag’s John Deere 8600 forage harvester has some really good technology including a moisture sensor to help farmers make better decisions about their paddocks, crops, and application of fertiliser. Reymer Ag will unlock another monitoring feature on the forage harvester this year to measure the nutritional content of the yield.
