RURAL PEOPLE » Shaydoc Holsteins and Jerseys Kim Newth Morrinsville dairy farmer Shayne Caird is looking forward to seeing the impact of some recent investments he has made in progeny from prominent North America cow families. Shayne is now in his sixth year 50/50 sharemilking and has long pursued proven cow families to achieve consistent performance in his Shaydoc herd, predominantly comprising Holstein Friesian cows. Last season he bought progeny of several influential North American cow families that respectively trace lineages to some impressive world champions, such as KHW Regiment Apple-ET EX96, an icon of the Red Holstein breed that won numerous world and grand champion titles in her time; Shoremar S Alicia-ET EX97, another All-American Holstein champion cow; and Regancrest-PR Barbie EX92, a premier Holstein brood cow, whose descendants are rated highly around the world. “I was lucky enough to be able to acquire descendants at dispersal sales last season that have enabled me to capitalise on some of these top cow families that have been influential all over the world.” Milking 210 cows on 72ha with partner Scott Duncan, Shaydoc’s herd also comprises of 70 pedigree Jerseys. “In recent years this number has increased as the passion for the breed has grown. Whilst it has also meant that with the Jerseys lesser maintenance requirements have allowed for the Holsteins to be fed better.” Having grown up in a dairying family, with his parents running a pedigree Holstein Friesian stud (Dandy View), Shayne grew up showing calves from a young age and achieved numerous championship titles and photo competition successes. He still gets a kick out of showing cows and in March met with great success at the Morrinsville A&P Show. His prized cow ShaydocCinderdoor Daana won best four-year-old Holstein class, third in the four-years and over All Breeds class and second in the feature Cow Town class. Daana’s daughter Shaydoc Dealmaker Danika came second in the two-year-old Holstein class and fifth in the All Breeds two- and three-year-old class. Daana’s younger sister Shaydoc Gold Chip Danelle also competed, placing second Holstein yearling and second All Breeds yearling. “It’s a family which I have had a lot of success with over the years, starting with earlier descendants at school calf clubs. It is great to still have this family and their influence in the herd today.” ShaydocCinderdoor Daana was also in the top six of cows named in the Townson Lindy – Four-YearOld Cow category at the latest Holstein Friesian NZ-Semex Ltd On-Farm Competition. At this same competition in 2021, Daana won the Maughlin Storm – Two-Year-Old Champion title and has excelled at various other shows and competitions. “Daana has always been pretty special. She originates from one of the cows Dad purchased when he put his herd together nearly 40 years ago. Right from a young calf, she has had an exemplary temperament and has always caught your eye. This has transpired into an impressive cow which keeps setting and breaking records within the Shaydoc herd, such as achieving 10,500L and 775kg milk solids last lactation – the highest ever at Shaydoc. Excitement is now growing for the first of her embryos to be born in 2024.” Kyle Selman 027 391 1201 kyleselman@yahoo.com UNDER SOWING, MAZE PLANTING & HARVESTING, CULTIVATION Subcontracts to PHONE ROB 027 419 8308 Matamata-Piako @Klausag • Goat Shed Cleanout • Round Hay & Silage 2x Film + Film Kuhn Balers • Earthmoving • Chicken Shed Cleanout • Muck Spreading • General Cultivation • Maize Planting & Harvesting • Bulk Silage 2x Loader Wagons • Large Square Hay • Undersowing One pass seed, fert & slugbait
