Business Rural North Summer 2023

When Jim and Kathy Everitt launched their rural contracting business in Kerikeri in 2003, Jim already had 20 years’ dairy farming experience under his belt. Having that strong rural background in the local area has stood them in good stead through the years. Everitt Contracting started with just one tractor and an effluent tank, but the line-up of vehicles and equipment has steadily grown since then. Today, they are very well-equipped for effluent maintenance work throughout the region. “We have a couple of John Deere tractors that we tow two Joskin effluent tanks with and we also have a McCormick tractor which runs a specialised pump to mix the herd homes,” says Jim. “We do a lot of effluent spreading work and help to keep farmers’ ponds compliant and we also empty herd homes. We have two dry spreaders that we use to clean out weeping walls, feed pads, raceway scrapings, drain cleanings and calf bedding.” Jim and Kathy have an extensive background in the farming sector. Jim started out as a farm worker in Kaiwaka with progression in his sights. His hard work culminated in a 50/50 sharemilking role in Kerikeri. “We did that for nine years and were milking 750 cows. We then sold our herd and went farm managing before deciding to go contracting. It was always something I’d been interested in as I’d seen the benefits of the effluent being spread on the farms I’d worked on.” Everitt Contracting is a true family business, delivering services to Northland farmers from Kawakawa to Kaitaia. Jim and Kathy’s son Ricky joined the business nine years ago, and they also employ a relief driver when needed. Most of their work involves spreading farm effluent from catchment ponds on to pasture. They are also fully equipped with dry spreaders for managing the build-up of solid effluent from feed pads. “We work in with the cropping round,” says Ricky. “Effluent works as extra fertiliser for farms. Our busiest time of the season is from the end of September through to November. It gets a bit dry through the summer months but then starts up again from March through to June when farmers need us to empty their ponds again so they have enough storage for winter.” Farmers appreciate the experience they get from Everitt Contracting and their responsible approach to taking care around waterways. As Jim observes, this year’s wet conditions have stalled many of their usual jobs, and as they need to prevent effluent from running into rivers, they have to stop spreading when it’s raining. “There are some jobs we just couldn’t get done due to the rain; however, we’ve managed to do a couple of little jobs since March. As soon as we get a window of opportunity, we’ll take it.” Ricky says they also work in with another local contractor. Last season, when he needed more tractors, Everitt Contracting was grateful to help by supplying their tractors and drivers when needed. “We all like to work in together and it helps to keep things ticking over.” For all your farm effluent needs, Everitt Contracting covers it all.
