People focused employer Tree Machine Services has been named the Supreme Winner of the 2023 Primary Industries Good Employer Awards, by prioritising employee development and supporting, motivating, and inspiring staff to progress forward with positive futures. Tree Machine Services based in New Plymouth won the overall award as well as the Maori Agribusiness Award and was the joint winner of the Small Business Recognition Award. Established in 2013 by Dave and Cathy Hare, Tree Machine Services provides all tree care services, property maintenance, farm forestry services, chainsaw and safety training, and forestry conservation training. Dave has more than 35 years of experience in forestry operations, silviculture operations, and the delivery of training within the forestry and conservation industry. He is very community focused and collaborates on many projects with local business, community groups, government organisations, and local iwi, cultivating beneficial relationships and ensures and ensuring a strong collective framework is in place to support rangatahi and employees, and expose them to future opportunities. Astyn Hare has recently joined her parents in the family business and saw an opportunity for Tree Machine Services at the Primary Industries Good Employer Awards. “My parents are very humble and so deserving of the recognition they received at the MPI awards,” Astyn says. “Supporting their people has always been at the forefront of what they do, and they have always strived to achieve a positive and inclusive organisational culture that fosters collaboration and teamwork.” Tree Machine Services incorporates Tikanga (values) Manaakitanga (respect and kindness), Whanaungatanga (relationships), Whenua (land) and Mautauranga (knowledge) Maori into the workplace on a daily basis. This comes in many facets including a commitment to practicing Maori customs, developing the team, a collaborative and inclusive approach to teamwork, the connection the team shares to care for the land, and their collective respect for the reo. “We practice karakia every morning before our teams head out to work for the day, before and after our meetings, and before our monthly meeting kai. We also practice karakia, pepeha, waiata, and haka with our training courses and organise marae noho and wananga for taonga puoro, (Maori musical instruments) and whakairo (Maori wood and bone carving) to assist with knowledge and to develop a deep respect and understanding for the culture. We have found this to be intensively beneficial for all Maori and non Maori rangatahi.” Tree Machine Services provides arborist, environmental, conservation, and forestry services and also delivers the North Tec / Te Pukenga forestry and conservation training programme. This training is supported by the Ngati Maru Iwi, Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (Hawera & Stratford), local community, and government agencies. Through this training rangatahi are provided with the knowledge, practical skills, and qualifications they need for future employment in arboriculture, forestry, land management, and related fields. “Our focus is to motivate, support and inspire our team to learn, grow and strive towards being a better version of themselves and achieve a positive future for themselves and their whanau,” Astyn says.
