Karen Phelps Farm Chemical Supplies 2020 Ltd, based in Bulls, has become a cornerstone of agricultural services in the region under the leadership of Adrian Bennie, a former Air Force veteran turned agricultural sprayer. After a 32-year career in the Air Force Adrian says, “it was time for a change” leading to his career transition. He started by working part-time for the original owner of Farm Chemical Supplies before progressing to full-time employment. In 2020, Adrian took the leap and purchased the business, which had already been serving the community for about 50 years. “I had always been interested in farming and had done a bit of ag contracting work over the years,” Adrian explains. “I saw a gap in the market to continue this spraying service.” This insight, combined with his passion for agriculture, laid the foundation for the company’s growth under his stewardship. Today Farm Chemical Supplies 2020 Ltd operates with a lean but efficient team. Adrian works alongside one full-time staff member and two contractors, while his wife and co-director, Sharon, manages the administration duties. The service area spans from Hunterville to Whanganui and out to the coast, covering a significant portion of the region’s agricultural land. What sets Farm Chemical Supplies apart in a competitive market? Adrian believes it’s the ability to “offer a personal responsive service being a small locally owned business.” This emphasis on personalised service has helped the company retain long-standing clients, with some having been with Farm Chemical Supplies for many years. The company specialises in broad acre ground spraying, from spray-out to crop care, and offers both supply and application of products. “We follow the client’s specifications,” says Adrian. “We can also supply the product or the farmer can sort that themselves. This flexibility allows farmers to choose the level of service that best suits their needs and budget.” Adrian is acutely aware of the economic pressures facing farmers. “We try to offer a cost-effective service and value for money as we recognise that costs are going up for farmers, which is challenging,” he says. “This understanding of clients’ needs has helped Farm Chemical Supplies build strong, lasting relationships within the farming community.” Since taking over, Adrian has significantly upgraded the company’s equipment. The fleet now includes four 4x4 Fuso Canters with 2000-litre tanks and 18-metre booms. A recent addition is a CLAAS Arion tractor with an Amazone mounted spray unit, purchased through CLAAS Harvest Centre Central Districts in Feilding. “It allows us to get on wetter ground quicker and also on rough ground,” Adrian explains, highlighting how this investment has expanded the operational capabilities.
