56 | Campbell Machinery looks to expand Karen Phelps Hastings-based engineering and repair service Campbell Machinery Services is on the hunt for qualified mechanics as it looks to expand its operations in response to increasing demand. Founded in 2017 by Rowan Campbell, the company has experienced steady growth, providing specialised services to a range of industries in the Hawkes Bay region. “We’re a diverse business. We’ll give anything a go,” says Rowan. Born and raised on a farm in Hawkes Bay, Rowan completed his apprenticeship working on Fendt and Massey Ferguson tractors. His experience working on farms and with Tasman Harvesting, which harvest for McCain Foods, laid the foundation for what would become a thriving local business. Campbell Machinery Services offers light engineering services and working on heavy machinery ranging from 20-tonne diggers to 50kg plate compactors. The company caters to a wide array of clients in the agriculture, viticulture, RURAL SERVICES » Campbell Machinery Services horticultural, and civil industries. Operating from a yard in Hastings with a small workshop, Campbell Machinery Services specialises in offering mobile on-site services to clients. This flexibility has been key to its success, allowing it to respond quickly to customer needs. Rowan says that what sets Campbell Machinery Services apart is its commitment to personal service. “If I say we will be there at a certain time, we will be. We’ll work through the night to get the job done if we need to. That’s why we have such a strong workload and don’t need to advertise.” Following the cyclone that hit Hawkes Bay, Campbell Machinery Services’ dedication to getting the job done shone through. “A lot of orchards needed to be cleared from silt so the trees wouldn’t die. There were machines coming from all across the country to Hawkes Bay. At the time, we were flat out servicing and repairing as the silt wore out all the track gear. There was also flood-damaged gear that needed to be up and running.” The company has also been involved in diverse projects, such as building a machine for tile drainage cleaning from scratch, including all the electrical wiring and making it remote-controlled. It has also worked on making and modifying equipment to suit farmers’ specific needs. The company’s reputation for reliability and quality workmanship has led to steady growth, bringing with it the need for additional skilled staff. Currently, Campbell Machinery Services employs an apprentice, Koru Kittleson. “It means I can train an apprentice to my standards, and he’s really talented, so it’s worked out well,” says Rowan. He aims to grow the business to a point where he can step back from hands-on work. However, finding more of the right staff is crucial to this vision. “We need qualified mechanics that can work autonomously,” he explains. “People who can use their initiative and get the job done for the client. We’re looking for someone with diverse skills who can think outside the square.” Rowan is quick to highlight the benefits of working for Campbell Machinery Services. “We’re a smaller family-owned company, not a big corporate. People are not just a number to us. It’s a positive work environment where people can grow, enjoy their work, and have a good time. We can be flexible with hours, and there’s such a variety of work. One day they might be rebuilding an engine, the next day operating a welder or re-wiring an irrigation pump.” PROUD TO SUPPORT CAMPBELL MACHINERY 027 574 4705 9 Barnes Pl, Hastings 4175 | Phone (06) 879 6238 info@aqualinecontractors.co.nz | www.aqualinecontractors.co.nz Proud to support Mole Ploughing, Trenching & Water Reticulation Services Campbell Machinery
