Bernadette Cooney Te Puke is known as the kiwifruit capital of the country and is home to Paengaroa Horticulture Limited, a company that has become a trusted name in orchard management and contracting services across the Bay of Plenty Region. Founded in 2017 by orchardist and managing director Parmbir Singh, the business has grown from a small four-hectare block into a thriving 35-hectare operation, plus another 120 hectares of kiwifruit they manage for other growers across the region. Helping kiwifruit growers maximise results and returns, Paengaroa Horticulture provides a full spectrum of orchard management and maintenance services from pruning to thinning to harvesting and preparing for export. They also provide certified spraying contractors for all orchard needs, as well as machinery contracting, from its fleet of equipment ready for everything orchard related. “We are fully equipped to handle the full cycle from planting, training, budding, thinning, mowing, mulching and harvesting support and management of orchards small or large,” says Parmbir. Paengaroa Horticulture offers free consultations, is fully insured, and holds Global GAP certification,a standard essential for growers and contractors within the industry. Paengaroa Horticulture provides services to Prospa by Eastpak, DMS Progrowers plus a variety of private orchards. Parmbir’s orchards produce strong yields across all three kiwifruit varieties – gold,green and red. “We normally produce 16,000 to 19,000 trays per hectare on the G3 gold kiwis and green produces 12,000–14,000 trays, and reds around 10,000–13,000.” All fruit is marketed through Zespri to export markets worldwide. Prambir employs 20 permanent staff and brings in as many as 150 seasonal workers during peak harvest. Originally from India, where his family farmed wheat and rice, Parmbir moved by himself to New Zealand at 18 where he completed his studies before starting as a kiwifruit worker. He worked his way up to supervisor, machinery operator and orchard manager, before buying his first orchard block. “I’ve pretty much done every job there is in kiwifruit from the ground up,” says Parmbir. “That experience helps me understand exactly what an orchard needs to succeed.” With the arrival of spring, the Paengaroa Hort team is team is wrapping up pruning and spraying while preparing for the summer season. A crucial stage that sets the crop potential for the entire Harvest season. “This time of year, is about setting the orchard up right. If you get pruning and bud counts wrong, the rest of the season can suffer” Parmbir says.
