Hugh de Lacy RURAL PEOPLE » Hinenui Genetics A change of ownership at the prominent Gisborne stud, Hinenui Genetics, has seen Deana and Phil Cook relocate the fully- recorded flock of 1,650 ewes - Coopworths Romneys, Romworth and ShedX - to their Wickham Hill Station at Ngatapa. Hinenui Genetics rose to prominence under the ownership of Deana’s parents, Lucy and Brett Teutenberg, who are stepping back from day-today operations, and now all rams will be sold from Deana and Phil’s Wickham Hill. The Teutenbergs will remain “very much a part of the fabric of our team,” says Deana, who gave up her career as a Registered Nurse to take a greater part in hers and Phil’s farming work, and to raise the couple’s three children. It’s a step up rather than a step away for Deana and Phil who have been running Hinenui Genetics at the Teutenbergs’ Rere farm since 2014. Deana’s grandfather, Bill Teutenberg, started recording the Coopworth flock in the 1980s, and became one of the first in the country to carry out faecal egg (FE) dosing of rams. Their acquisition makes Deana and Phil the third generation to be running Hinenui Genetics. Phil is originally from Gisborne and worked at several stations in the district before he and Deana settled at Rere, where the couple have joined the Teutenbergs in focusing on breeding quality stud stock and continually improving the genetics of the four breeds they farm. Hinenui Genetics has built its reputation on recording all their flock ewes for full maternal worth on Sheep improvement Ltd, covering reproduction, growth, lamb survival, meat, facial eczema tolerance and worm resistance, as well as dag, shed and body condition scores. “FEC (faecal egg count) has become a high priority for us, and we’re seeing great gains in this area after making it a high priority in ram selection in recent years,” Deana says. “While the ShedX rams seem to have a natural resistance to worms, it was exciting to see one of our Romney sires, 5324/23, come through as one of the top rams on SIL for his FEC results. “As a result of that he’s being used outside our flocks.” Part of the programme since its establishment, Hinenui Genetics has won FEGold status for its Coopworth Romney and Romworth flocks. The goal of producing a low-maintenance sheep led Hinenui Genetics to establish the ShedX breed, beginning with a Coopworth base with the natural shedder Wiltshire and small contributions from Aussie White and Exlana. “We started crossing a shedding lamb over our open breach FEGold Coopworth ewes with the aim of breeding a sheep that needed shearing only once a year, with no need for crutching, then progressed to a full-shedding sheep while keeping the FE and mothering ability,” Deana says. “Dosing our 2024 Shedding rams at 0.5mg/kg has made us one of the top FE tolerant Shedding flocks in the country.” Your Partner in Livestock & general freight Hauling Everything, Handled With Care.
