| 59 Over 3 decades for Tulloch Contracting The business operates with a seasonal workforce of 12 to 15 skilled machine operators. Bernadette Cooney With summer on its way, Tulloch Contracting of Masterton are preparing for a busy season out in the field offering a full suite of agricultural contracting services to Wairarapa farmers. For more than three decades, the business has been providing cultivation, planting, silage, baleage and baling services. “Right now, we’re starting cultivation, planting grain crops, and re-grassing after winter crops,” says Aaron Cook, shareholder and manager of Tulloch Contracting. “We’ve done a little bit of baleage already, and next week we will be into fine-chop silage. It’s all happening over summer.” Tulloch Contracting handles everything from ploughing, rolling, aerating, and soil preparation to direct drilling, and precision planting of maize and beet. On the feed side, they cover baleage, silage, hay, and grain harvesting, as well as producing supplements and calf meal from locally sourced whole grains. An area that Aaron says is seeing strong growth. Supported by modern systems for scheduling, job management and technology integration with machinery the company works closely with Tulloch Farm Machinery for service and maintenance. “We use dealer support for more complex machines,” says Aaron. “Our operators use full GPS guidance with section control, achieving up to 25 millimetre accuracy in planting. Drivers also use Taboola (formerly TrackMap) integrated with Google Maps, allowing precise paddock navigation and hazard awareness.” The GPS has made a big difference to accuracy and waste reduction plus helps fatigue management for operators. They can focus on making sure the machines are running well, taking a level of stress out of the job. Tulloch Contracting have recently bought a new truck and Grange brand soil aerator from England. “The aerator assists in pre-aerating ground for direct drilling and that to enhance yields, so to reduce compaction pre-direct drilling,” says Aaron. The result is healthier soil structure and stronger crop yields. “It’s probably more suitable than anything else on the market for pre-aerating ground before drilling.” The business operates with a seasonal workforce of 12 to 15 skilled machine operators serving a diverse range of farmers from Masterton to Martinborough including dairy sharemilkers and sheep and beef farmers. They cultivate and harvest brassica crops plus beet and maize planting, silage and baling. Also, mobile silage bagging and maize strip tiling along with silage stacks and silage tubes for reduced waste. Over the years, the company has grown alongside Wairarapa’s farming sector, earning long-standing relationships with local clients.
