52 | Getting the job done when farmers need it Beckett Contracting services to farmers around Rotongaro and Huntly include groundwork, silage and hay (round and conventional) baling, fertiliser spreading, undersowing, disc drilling and planting. Karen Phelps Beckett Contracting has established a solid reputation with farmers in the North Waikato for getting the job done on time and on budget for more than 20 years. Part of the recipe for success has been the fact that company owner Nelson Beckett is a local and a farmer himself so well understands the needs of his clients. Beckett Contracting is based on his family’s 160ha farm. Nelson and wife Rachel run their own bull farm at Onewhero where they fatten 250 bulls each year. Long term employee Kane Nepe who has worked for the company since 2016 now runs the contracting business day-to-day. Kane started visiting Nelson’s farm in the holidays as a youngster and got the bug. He started driving tractors when he finished school before coming to work for Beckett Contracting and now offers over 20 years experience. Beckett Contracting services to farmers around Rotongaro and Huntly include groundwork, silage and hay (round and conventional) baling, fertiliser spreading, undersowing, disc drilling and planting. The right plant is important to ensure the jobs get done in a timely manner and includes a fleet of six John Deere M and R Series tractors, two Krone Comprima balers, Claas rakes, double mowers, roller drill and power harrows. In addition the business also has an Allen ED4000 drill that has proved popular with farmers. “Farmers are loving that it can apply fertiliser, seed, clover on top and slug bait as well all in one pass. There are real cost and time saving benefits,” says Kane. Stand alone balers and a separate wrapper marks another point of difference and enables Beckett Contracting to do this job faster than a combination baler can. “This ensures the grass is always baled at optimum timing,” says Kane. In the peak of the season Beckett Contracting employs five staff and Kane says the talented team is a key aspect of getting the job done to a high quality for clients, especially as there is plenty of rolling and steep country they work on. Nelson helps out driving as needed and Rachel supports the business in any way she can. A number of key local businesses also support Beckett Contracting to do the job including TDH Tractor Services in Huntly with mobile servicing of the equipment and agricultural packaging company Integrated Packaging. Based at Rotongaro Beckett Contracting covers south of the Bombay Hills to just north of Ngaruawahia. Most work is from long term loyal clients and word of mouth new clients due to the company’s respected reputation. Kane says Beckett Contracting aims to get the job done when farmers need it done recognising that timing is the key to a high quality end result. He says the goal for Beckett Contracting is continued yet sustainable growth: “Each year we try to do things better and better.” Beckett Contracting
