The past season developed into a good one, despite the weather going from extremely wet last winter and spring to extremely dry in February. Russell Fredric Grazing bulls in two hectare cells has become a key part of Parengarenga Incorporation’s farm system in recent years. General manager Julian Peters says the station now has 1350ha of pasture in grazing cells. “We’ve just completed another 100 hectares into bull cells with permanent fencing.” “It’s just intensifying the traditional bull finishing platform and it allows us to get better control of our pastures and better utilisation. “Because we’ve got Angus bulls, they come off our breeding cows; we run the two-year-old bulls two to the hectare in those cells, and the yearlings at three-and-a-half to the hectare.” Based in Te Kao, 70 kilometres north of Kaitaia, Parengarenga is a Maori incorporation that manages $52m of farm and forestry assets on behalf of 3000 shareholders, employing a total of 36 staff. The station is about 15 kilometres long and six kilometres wide and carries 42,000 stock units on 5100ha effective,on a total of 6400ha on the Northland peninsula.
