60 | Best genetics behind Shorthorn stud sale Hinewaka Shorthorn Stud is offering 20 bulls for sale at its on-farm sale on June 5. Sue Russell With a history stretching back now six generations, Hinewaka Shorthorns has been in the business of breeding commercially sound shorthorn bulls for over 150 years. “Our aim is simple – to produce bulls for commercial farmers that are suited to hill country properties just like ours, with the intention of adding value to the client’s bottom line.” The breed is well known for having very good IMF (intramuscular fat), with the breed’s ability to produce marble second only to Wagyu. Shorthorns are naturally quiet in disposition, which plays through in lower ph in their meat, placing the breed at the premium end of the market’s scale. “With some meat companies offering farmers premiums for IMF there is a real opportunity for our clients to add value to their beef operations, our job is to supply the best genetics possible to add significant value to their meat yield,” says Mitch. Two new bulls from Canada – Muridale Phantom 10F and Fraser’s Dr Pepper 132D – have sired many of the bulls standing up for sale this year in June. “We source the majority of our genetics from Australia and some from Canada, to continue to build on genetic gain potential we can pass on to our clients.” In 2023, Hinewaka secured the NZ semen rights in Sprys Down Under S77 – the top priced bull at Sprys sale in March 2023 sold for $70,000. Mitch says a priority always is to look at the best sires to add into the mix, with an aim of future ON FARM » Hinewaka Shorthorns expansion of the stud. This year’s on-farm bull sale, scheduled for Wednesday, June 5 is gearing up to be another successful one with plenty of demand growing for stock on offer. All bulls are semen service tested and guaranteed fertile at the time of sale. “We will stand up for sale 20 bulls that are well grown and, we believe, exactly what the beef industry is aiming for. Our aim is to breed fertile easy care, fast growing cattle, with carcass traits to match” This year, the sale will be in conjunction with BIDR, for those unable to attend on the day. Bulls will be available for inspection from 1pm on sale day, however should anyone wish to view them prior to sale day, this can be organised by arrangement. The sale catalogue will be available from middle of May, with photos and videos up on Hinewaka’s Facebook page. “There’s always the excitement of waiting to see how buyers respond to our offering. Sale day is the end of a long well-managed process of selection, so by the time sale day rolls around, we’re really keen to see how one year measures up against another.” For further information on Hinewaka’s breeding programme or sale lots, contact Mitch Blackwood on 027 496 1462 or email hinewaka@outlook.co.nz.
