54 | Paving the way for reduced carbon emissions Central Transport is a leading freight company in the rural sector. Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Central Transport Ltd Reperoa’s Central Transport has recently commissioned New Zealand’s first green hydrogen dual-fuel milk collection tanker in collaboration with Miraka and Halcyon Power. This innovative vehicle is designed to reduce milk collection CO2 emissions by approximately 35% per vehicle, contributing to more sustainable futures for the dairy industry and the transport industry alike. This initiative aligns with Central Transport’s commitment to sustainability, which as well as more energy-efficient engines, includes more energy-efficient driving, efficient logistics systems, and expert dispatchers who ensure trucks take the most energy efficient route possible and consistently achieve minimal dead running time. The new dual fuel tanker operates using a combination of diesel and green hydrogen, covering approximately 165,000 kilometers annually with a capacity to haul 58 metric tonnes. It requires two hydrogen refills daily, supplied by Halcyon Power’s commercial-scale green hydrogen plant located adjacent to Miraka’s dairy facility in Mokai, northwest of Taupo. “We are proud to be collaborating with Miraka and Halcyon on this future-focused initiative,” says Central Transport operations manager Andrew Sinclair. “Currently transportation generates about 40% of CO2 emissions and 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. At Central Transport, we are working towards creating a sustainable environment for future generations. By introducing ‘greener’ vehicles and ‘greener’ fuels, we will pave the way for reduced carbon emissions and lead to a better quality of life for all.” Central Transport is a leading freight company in the rural sector and the exclusive supplier of milk tanker transport to Miraka. Managing director Brendon Cane is well-known in the industry for his innovative approach, which is partly responsible for Central Transport’s success over its past 20 years of operation. Andrew says Brendon has seen hydrogen as the best way forward for the heavy transport industry. “Although hydrogen-powered vehicles are still an emerging technology, Brendan believes they represent the most environmentally appropriate energy source for heavy freight,” he says. With the dual fuel tanker commissioned in September, Central Transport has since been working on a tailored logistical strategy to get it running as efficiently as possible. It has been double-shifted and running more or less 24 hours a day with three different drivers who Andrew says have taken to the vehicle like ducks to water. “We’re fortunate to have some really great drivers and we’ve hit the ground running,” Andrew says.
