60 | Sons of Millah Murrah Rembrandt coming up Whangara Angus is set to further strengthen its position as a leading source of performance-focused Angus genetics. Whangara Angus is preparing for its annual on-farm bull sale on 24 June, with excitement building around the rst and exclusive New Zealand-bred sons of Australian super sire Millah Murrah Rembrandt, who sold for $240,000. “Millah Murrah Rembrandt is performing really well in Australia and we have the exclusive semen rights to him in New Zealand so there has been a bit of a buzz,” says Tom Sanson, who along with Andrew Cribb took over Whangara Angus in March 2021. “Some studs around the country have been watching him so we’re expecting strong demand for his sons. Breeders are always looking for the next big thing.” He says Millah Murrah Rembrandt brings an impressive combination of visual appeal, structural integrity and performance data to the Whangara breeding programme. “He is an amazing looking bull and has great data as well so he has it all,” says Tom. “He delivers exceptional maternal traits, with good calving ease, moderate birth weights, while maintaining growth and carcass quality.” In addition to the June sale, Whangara Angus is launching its rst-ever spring yearling bull sale at the end of September. The new event will feature specially selected bulls suitable for heifer mating, with approximately 30 yearling bulls expected to be offered. Previously, these yearling bulls were sold by private treaty. Since taking over the operation four years ago, the new owners have maintained a performance and data-focused approach to herd development. Located on 1,100 hectares between Gisborne and Tologa Bay, Whangara Angus operates on land that has been farmed since 1929, though under an unusual arrangement. “We didn’t actually buy the farm, we purchased all the stock that they had, and we signed a 20-year lease on it which was unique in itself, almost unheard of,” explains Tom. A key selling point for Whangara Angus is its commitment to realistic farming conditions. The operation runs alongside a signi cant sheep component, with 6,000-7,000 lambs nished annually and around 2,000 ewes in the ock. Its approximately 400 registered Angus stud cows and their offspring run on steep hill country, re ecting the conditions many commercial buyers face. “Our cows run under the same conditions as any commercial farmer - calve on the steep hills and run there year round. They have to t into a wider beef and sheep farming programme, as they would with our clients,” says Tom. “So people can have assurance that our genetics will perform well under those conditions.” ON FARM » Whangara Angus 393 Gladstone Rd PO Box 1247 Gisborne 4040 Ph: 06 869 1234 E: post@grahamdobson.co.nz www.grahamdobson.co.nz Our Services: Farm Business Administration • Personnel Recruitment Specialist knowledge in Farm Accounting • Human Resources Management Investment Advice and Business Advisory Services Your Business Our Services Your Success ‘You have the vision, let us help you get there!’ Home of Larsawn Manufactured Products and so much more. While continuing the legacy established by previous owner Patrick Lane, Whangara Angus has also introduced new ideas since the 2021 takeover, for example putting more selection pressure on the cows in terms of structure due to feedback from clients. With its dual sales now established in the calendar, Tom hopes that Whangara Angus is set to further strengthen its position as a leading source of performance-focused Angus genetics for New Zealand farmers.
