Thanks to the Farm Focus software they adopted a few years ago on the advice of their accountant Robin Tomlinson, Laura and Jeremy know exactly where any additional capital can be put to best use. “As well as dropping some debt out of the equation we can put some money into fencing to improve our subdivision and make some smaller paddocks for finishing cattle. We keep track of where we’re at each month so we don’t get blindsided. Laura puts in all the bills and outgoings and incomings so we can forecast and we have an up-to-date idea of where we’re at. We can see where we are compared to what we’ve budgeted for and make changes as we have to.” Monowai Station is a low cost, low input system and they knew where every dollar was going when they tightened their belt to ‘survive 25’ as they dubbed it. When prices improved at the end of the year, with a $700 increase in what they got for their 40, 2-yr old steers, they could address areas that will make money in time on top of their usual careful expenditure making sure that every dollar spent is in areas that will give them a return such as animal health and fertiliser. ‘Spending money where we could make money’ as Jeremy put it. Thanks to Farm Focus they’ve survived 2025, and if prices stay good it looks like they could thrive in 2026.
