And while the horned Herefords continue to lose ground to the polled breed in New Zealand, there remains a big horned gene-pool in Canada, the United States and Australia from which to draw. “I’m not really interested in North American horned Hereford bloodlines because they tend to be too big, and they don’t suit the feed and climate challenges we have here,” Wayne says. “But those bloodlines are constantly being taken into Australia, which wears them down a bit so they suit conditions there, and in South Westland.” There are only four pure horned Hereford studs left in New Zealand, and they’re gradually being se- duced by the a combination of the ease with which a horned herd can be switched to polls, and a rising awareness of the danger to humans and animals alike from those horns. That’s not a concern that Wayne Williams shares, so he’s sticking to his Glacier lines, horns and all.
