Business Rural Spring 2021
| 79 RURAL SERVICES » Humm Engineering Ltd Guyon can’t run a business and build the shed at the same time, but we thought about it and talked it over and the seed grew and Dan ended up work- ing with us on the project.” Design Engineer Kelvin Lysaght joined the team and several sets of drawings later they had the plan for the 1600 square metre workshop that met all of Guyon’s requirements. “He’s very knowledge- able and professional,” says Rebekah, “and he’s worked for the council himself so he dealt with all the application and compliance needs.” The title for the land came through early in 2020 and the earthworks swiftly got underway. The concrete pad had to wait until after lockdown. “Lockdown held things up with Guyon the only one working for over a month,” says Rebekah. “ Then we came out of lockdown and the staff came back on, Humm Engineering was busy and it was full-steam ahead. We got all the steel and Guyon worked tirelessly, coming in early and going home late seven days a week to get all the steel-framing done while the rest of the team looked after the customers, in our cramped workshop, with every- one doing the best they could.” The framing went up on site in early October with most of that month spent getting the space ready for the cladding from Long Run Iron. The col- our steel cladding and roofing were on in time for the Humms to hold a workshop opening just before Christmas. “So we could show off this new com- mercial space that we have invested in in Methven, for the future,” says Rebekah. “Because in reality even though it may not be Humm Engineering space forever, it’ll out live both of us so we feel like we’ve put something in Meth- ven that’ll be here for a long time and Methven is a thriving town with a strong commercial industry so we’re really proud of the fact that we’ve put this beautiful, big, heavy duty, modern workshop here.” The doors opened in January and what is now a team of nine are putting the new space through its paces as Guyon’s dream shed gets to fulfill its potential. Things picked up when harvest started in February and it really hasn’t stopped since accord- ing to Rebekah, “We’ve expanded our stock so we’ve got a huge range of steel and fasteners on hand. We’re an effi- cient modern workshop,” says Rebekah with pride. “All our welders use modern Kemppi technology, and we’ve got the latest machinery. We’ve got the steel and the staff so we can do repairs at the drop of a hat when they’re needed. “We’ve partnered with Hydraulink Mid-Can- terbury so we’re doing hydraulic repairs as well. We’ve got a huge skill set in the team, and they’re all sound agriculturally based problem solvers. “They’re as happy as Guyon and I are with the new space.” • from page 76 Reaching New Heights Contact us: 027 419 2554 | Email: ashburtoncranes2015@gmail.com 76 Bremners Road, Ashburton | Visit our website: www.ashburtoncranehire.co.nz Hose and Fittings AGENTS FOR LINCOLN LUBRICATION SYSTEMS MID CANTERBURY 17 JB Cullen Drive, ASHBURTON Ph 03 308 8848 SOUTH CANTERBURY 114 Hilton Highway, TIMARU Ph 03 934 7173 FOR ALL YOUR HYDRAULIC REQUIREMENTS PROUD TO SUPPORT HUMM ENGINEERING 24 hours 7 days service 42 J B Cullen Drive, Ashburton Business Estate Ph: 03 307 0593 W: www.roo ng.co.nz E: clrash@roo ng.co.nz • New Roofs & Re-Roof • Corrugate & 5 Rib Profile • Flashings • Fascia • Gutter • Downpipes • Permaglass • Water Tanks ® LONG RUN ROOFING ASHBURTON Mid Canterbury’s trusted roofing manufacturer using NZ made products and a locally based team working for our community
