Business Rural Spring 2021
| 81 With favourable weather and high meat and milk prices, Kinsman Contracting could be set for the perfect season, if it weren’t for the labour is- sues. “We are lucky enough to have found enough staff, although I know quite a few contractors that are still struggling,” Grant says. He says the situation is as bad as he has ever seen it in 27 years. Industry association Rural Contractors New Zealand is helping contractors to bring in overseas staff, but there is only so much they can do in these Covid times. means a one-stop shop for farmers RURAL SERVICES » Kinsman Contracting Contracting runs an Austin roller drill, a Duncan Coulter direct drill, and a Väderstad Tempo high- speed precision planter. “This planter delivers unmatched precision at double the speed of traditional planters, and performs exceptionally in all conditions. Crops gets the best start possible which results in an even emergence.” Tempo can plant multiple crop types, simply by changing the row spacing and machine set up for different crops. It offers high versatility on farm resulting in increased efficiency and minimised machine costs per hectare. Kinsman Contracting is the only contractor in the district with a Kverneland Optima planter which runs a unique 375mm row spacing for fod- der beet drilling, which can quickly be changed to 750mm for maize planting. In cultivation, an HE-VA disc roller contour is perfect for heavy soil compaction, fixing soil that has been pugged over winter. An Amazone power harrow levels ploughed paddocks ready for drilling, and a Salford cultiva- tor prepares the seedbed for planting. A Kuhn5 furrow reversible plough and a Kvernland 6 furrow reversible plough get rid of unwanted trash in the paddock and starts preparing the soil again for planting. Kinsman Contracting has used the same proven baling technology for about 20 years, moving from Welger to Lely balers which Grant says are ef- ficient and make great bales. When AGCO aquired Lely, Grant stuck with his brand and in 2019 bought two Fendt balers to accompany his three year old Lely machine. All three variable chamber balers make bales that vary from 0.9m-1.6m diameter, and feature the Constant Pressure System that applies pressure to the bale in the chamber to maintain constant density. Grant, who feeds a few animals himself, would choose variable chamber over fixed chamber balers any day. “They make bales that are solid from the centre and rolled from the start, making them easier to feed out.” Kinsman Contracting makes most wrapped bales 1200mm diameter, but will also make 1250mm to 1300mm bales so customers can choose their preference. • Communication Solutions • Commercial and CB 2-way radios • Event hire radios • Lone worker safety • GPS and PLBs • Wireless internet ashcoms.co.nz 03 684 4988 104 Le Cren Street, Timaru C ommunications 36 King St, Temuka Ph. 03 615 8736 www.tyregeneral.co.nz can strengthen your business.
