Inset: Juston Short with the Winton handy grapple. Karen Phelps Winton Engineering has been serving the farming community for over 20 years. The family owned and operated business is run by father and son team Rodger and Justin Short who say they take great pride in producing top quality work at a competitive price. Winton Engineering undertakes all types of fitting, turning and machining work, welding, dairy shed repairs, dairy yards, backing and top gates, hydraulic repairs, farm equipment repairs, design and manufacture of new equipment as well as maintenance on all types of plant and machinery. An emergency service is offered so farmers’ equipment can be back up and running again as quickly as possible in the event of an unexpected breakdown. As examples of the company’s innovation it has its own range of farm products and machines including an aerator, silage grabs, log splitter, quick hitch, pre ripper, bale forks, chisel plough, stock feeders, handy grapple, mobile cattle ramp, cambridge and rubber tyred rollers, fodder beet bucket, transportable bale feeder and more. Rodger says the Winton leveller cultivator is one of its most popular products. It has been designed to combine the use of two implements in one pass of the paddock and overcomes the problem of conventional levellers where tractor wheel tracks remain behind the leveller and then, when sown into grass, the tractor marks are evident across the paddock for its life time. Their Winton Handy Grapple is also proving to be a very dependable and popular product. Winton Engineering also completes new dairy wintering sheds, designing, building and erecting all components through their sister company Advanced Dairy Barns. Rodger says Advanced Dairy Barns can complete a project from start to finish. A key point of difference is that the product is sourced direct resulting in very competitive pricing. Advanced Dairy Barns imports the fabricated steel, all galvanised and welded up ready to bolt together saving customers time and money. It completes all the pipework, stalls and gates etc through Winton Engineering and even has its own effluent scraper product it has designed. The company also holds the New Zealand agency for AGRICOW matting and cow brushes and supplies dual chamber waterbeds from the USA and Kraiburg matting from Germany. Demand for cow barns has seen Advanced Cow Barns come up with its own kitset product it can ship anywhere in New Zealand giving farmers more flexibility over who builds their barn. For example one customer’s son, who is a builder, is constructing the cow barn via the kitset model. Both Rodger and Justin run their business in a hands on manner. Justin, a fitter turner by trade, takes on the main day-to-day running of the business and is on the ground, out on site. Rodger’s role is the organisational aspects, ensuring materials arrive on site when they should and projects progress smoothly. Rodger grew up on a farm before training as a motor mechanic so he knows the importance of a timely service for the rural community. He says the team is a vital aspect of the sound reputation Winton Engineering has earned over the years creating its moto ‘on price, on time. The company employs a team of around 12 including qualified engineers, fitter turners, welders and apprentices to bring the next generation into the industry. e: office@mcgregorconcreteltd.co.nz www.mcgregorconcreteltd.com Te Anau: (03) 249 7051 Lumsden: (03) 236 6580 READY MIX CONCRETE - GRAVEL WINTON HEAD OFFICE P.O.
