Russell Fredric Nithdale Genetics has actively embraced science to the bene t of its livestock and farmer clients while also improving the bottom line of Nithdale Station where it is based. The station is a 1478ha generational family farm owned by Andrew and Heather Tripp, located on hill country at Kaiwera near Gore. Breeding for over 40 years, Nithdale is a multiple award winner in the Beef and Lamb New Zealand Sheep Industry Awards and ranks among the top sheep breeders in New Zealand. Nithdale Genetics’ stud breeds Romney and Suftex sheep, with a focus on meat, growth and survival and offers both maternal and terminal sires to farmers New Zealand-wide. “We gene test every lamb, both the Romney and the Suftex ock. We’ve been doing parentage since 2012. The rst bene t is you get more accurate parentage, we are getting full parentage on 99% of all lambs,” Andrew says. Accurate parentage identi cation translates to greater accuracy in the overall genetic evaluation with the end goal being faster genetic gain, he says. “It also means you can mob-mate. Ewes are split up based on a programme that’s put together by Abacus Bio. It means we can draft off the sheep and put them into mating groups of close relatives and then the rams you put over those groups are more distantly related so you’re minimising inbreeding.” Nithdale Romneys genetic trends graph in June 2022 for New Zealand Maternal Worth (NZMW) + wWormFEC + Meat + Dags show $11 per ewe ahead of the industry average and a faster rate of genetic gain, while its Wairaki-base Romney ock is $7 ahead of the industry average. Nithdale Romneys, which average 81% Romney and 19% Texel, had the Myomax gene introduced into them in 2005. Myomax is a major gene in the Texel breed responsible for 60% of their lean meat. Nithdale Suftex genetic trends graph for March 2021 for New Zealand Terminal Worth + Dags show $10 per lamb ahead of the industry average, again with a faster rate of genetic gain. These gains have been achieved in just 10 years of using genomics. As well as boosting the station’s bottom line, the results have been recognised industry-wide with a string of awards. Nithdale Station was the winner of seven awards in six years at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Sheep Industry Awards. It also won the Terminal Cross Section at the 2016 Beef + Lamb NZ Golden Lamb Awards and the Southland Ballance Farm Environment Awards 2014. Its Romney ock is one of 14 in New Zealand which quali es for the WormFEC Gold Group Andrew sees resistance to internal parasites as being increasingly important due to growing evidence of drench resistance in New Zealand, making it dif cult to treat sheep which, genetically, have lower resistance to internal parasites. Stock Improvement Limited (SIL) data shows that while Nithdale’s Romney’s have been gaining in parasite resistance, the industry average for this trait has been getting worse. At Nithdale, breeding values based on pedigree and performance information have been enhanced with genomic information based on the DNA of the animal through the single-step genetic evaluation run by SIL. “Anyone buying rams, probably the most important decision they’ve got to make is not the sheep they get off the breeder, it’s which breeder to go to in the rst place. If we make faster genetic gain so do our clients.” Andrew and Heather Tripp, of Nithdale Station a 1478ha generational family farm owned by Andrew and Heather Tripp, located on hill country at Kaiwera near Gore.
