54 | ‘Exceptional clip’ woven into exquisite blankets Polly established Exquisite Wool Blankets in 2008. Sue Russell MEAT & WOOL » Belmont Station / Yaldhurst Wools Yaldhurst Wools has been sending wool for processing to the Mill for decades now and the connection between Yaldhurst Wools and the Hainsworth Mill runs deep. Family members from the Mill have visited the farms in New Zealand to see where some of the beautiful wool they spin into blankets comes from. “We always get such lovely wool from Belmont Station, very clean with little or no vegetation in the clip. We have just sent off an exceptional clip of very white lamb’s wool that both Annabelle and Chris wanted to see made into blankets. We’re expecting its arrival here any day now,” says Polly. The blanket, made from 29 micron lambs wool, will be available for sale through Exquisite Wool Blanket’s on-line shop. “Actually, there isn’t really an alternative to wool. It breathes, keeps us warm in colder weather and much cooler than synthetics on warmer days. It has a life to it, feels beautiful to wear and be surrounded in. I can’t over-state what a wonderful product it is,” Annabelle says. Polly says that one of her biggest concerns is that wool isn’t considered affordable when measured against petro-chemically based man-made materials. “It really disappoints me that many of our top designers still produce garments using synthetics. It’s not helping our environment in any way. Here in New Zealand, we naturally produce wonderful wool which should be seen as a valuable resource rather than a bi-product from farming sheep.” And there are other exciting uses for wool in store about to be released on the market. “We’ve been working away with a partner on producing a revolutionary product which will have far-reaching environmental bene ts and potentially replace a large amount of plastic from ending up in land- lls and as micro-plastics, now being found as far away as Antarctica, so watch this space,” says Polly. Their sprawling 950ha rolling to steep hill-country property is home to 7000 stock units, including 3200 ewes and Waterton Suffolk, South Suffolk and Charollais sheep studs. The main commercial ock is Perendale, an easy-care breed known for easy lambing, good mothering and survival with lambs nishing out well to produce a lean, heavyweight carcass. “Being a stud sheep breeder, we have always placed an emphasis on using great genetics so we get top Perendale rams from Snowden Station. and the wool we grow is very high quality. Our shearing contractors, McCarthy Shearing , take very good care of the clip,” says Annabelle. Wool is something Annabelle has been surrounded with all her life. Her parents John and Marylyn Betts established Yaldhurst Wools back in 1988. The business sources and buys wool from South Island farms, including Belmont Station and exports it for processing. Today, Yaldhurst Wools is a third-generation business with Annabelle’s sister and brother-in-law Polly and Ross McGuckin running the operation with the help of their son Edward and nephew Patrick Cotter, while Chris and Annabelle’s daughter Elizabeth, works at Belmont Station. “We have tried to include the younger generation as much as possible as the wool sector needs young people to get involved in it, bringing fresh ideas and inspiration,” says Polly. In 2008, adding value to the business came in the form of Polly establishing Exquisite Wool Blankets, which sells a beautiful range of brightly coloured pure wool blankets and throws made at the A W Hainsworth Mill, in Yorkshire. “You cannot beat NZ Wool it is naturally grown from grass” PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH BELMONT STUD Main West Coast Road, Yaldhurst, RD 6, Christchurch 7676, New Zealand Phone: +64 3 342 6223 Email: ywlwool@nzwool.com Web: www.nzwool.com 9thWaterton Ram Sale Charollais, % Charollais, Suffolk and South Suffolk Rams THELARGESTOFFERINGOFCHAROLLAIS AND CHAROLLAIS X IN CANTERBURY 32 88% to Pure Charollais, 32 Suffolk, 20 South Suffolk, 10 Suffolk x Charollais Hazlett Snow Buckley 027 561 4652 PGGW Greg Uren 027 431 4051 Chris Hampton 03 614 3330 027 202 5679 cahampton@xtra.co.nz Hazlett Wayne Andrews 027 484 8232 PGGW Simon Eddington 027 590 8612 www.hazlett.nz Viewing from 2.30pm Helmsman Sale 4.00pm Tuesday 13 December 2022 Belmont Station, 50 Kerr Road, Cave, South Canterbury - Hill bred - Commercially farmed - SIL recorded - Eye Muscle Scanned - Brucellosis Accredited - Over 60 years breeding For more information or a catalogue, contact: Find us on Facebook: Waterton Sheep Stud Callum Dunnett Hazlett 027 462 0126
