Owned by Amanda and Adrian Currie the sprawling mainly sheep and beef farm is also home to ve working Clydesdale’s, chickens, a new vineyard producing Pinot Noir wine, and until recently a few pigs as well. Manager, Jason Sutherland, says the care and thought the owners put into the property, to nd new purposes for the land and to add value to their core activities is something that really sets this farm apart from others he has worked on. “Amanda in particular is really into regenerative farming practices, centred on care of soil as the basis for production. “She is so enthusiastic about the farm’s potential and its outreach that she has invested in the farm environment with landscaping and buildings for visitors to enjoy,” Jason says. And if that isn’t enough, Tinwald Farm has just taken out an award which focuses on encouraging people into the primary sector, in the form of the Bayleys People in Primary Sector Award at this year’s Otago Ballance Awards. “We work with Otago Polytechnic to provide students on the High Country farming course access to an authentic learning experience where they can learn about and participate in all the activities that take place on a working farm. It gives these would-be farmers an in-depth experience of what farming is all about. The students enjoy learning in a hands-on approach.” Expanding beyond the traditional purposes of raising sheep and beef, Tinwald Farm is developing a new business – milking sheep to make cheese.
