80 | Biologically sustainable nutrients a focus Vitalise, a feed supplement which includes calcium, magnesium, is proving popular with dairy farmers. Sue Russell Wanting to nd a reliable, ef cient and costeffective way to deliver essential nutrients into the soil, where they could do the most good for farmers, drove central Otago farmer Scott Pascoe to invest his own time and capital into developing and manufacturing pellitised ne lime based fertilisers. Driving development of this ground-breaking fertiliser technology was an understanding of and experience with just how inef cient traditional lime fertiliser applications were. “We were farming then in Canterbury and could see that the Aglime and nutrients being delivered by air or spread by trucks was drifting off the farm in the wind. Instead of staying where we needed it to be it was drifting on to neighbours properties. There had to be a better way,” Scott explains. In the mid-90’s Scott and his brother Paul established a groundspreading business and a lime crushing plant. Eventually there was a strong push by their farming clients to supply the Aglime as ne as possible because that was working best, but this was more prone to drift. There was a need to package the ne particles into a pellet. “We really wanted though to make it into a product that could be applied using traditional spreading equipment and it wasn’t until 2000 that we developed the equipment and started doing trials throughout New Zealand.” Through these experiences and re ning manufacturing systems Scott discovered the perfect ne lime pelletised size, one providing the largest possible surface area per pellet, resulting in less volume needing to be applied on any given paddock. This led to the next stage in the journey; the development of a number of specialised blends for speci c application purposes. “We were trying to solve a problem. How to get the valuable minerals and nutrients down into the soil where they could do the most good. We weren’t necessarily after a big monetary reward.” From these humble beginnings the manufacturing process has become internationally recognised. Through the last 20 years Scott says the focus has been on using biologically sustainable nutrients. ‘Optimise’ a pellitised ne lime based fertiliser was soon followed by ‘Vitalise’ a feed supplement RURAL SERVICES » CP Lime Solutions • to page 82 CARRIERS OF LIVESTOCK, GENERAL FREIGHT, BULK & FERTILISER CHEVIOT TRANSPORT 2017 LTD 99 Ward Rd, Cheviot 7310 P: 03 319 8644 A/H: 0276 776 787 • Tracmap proof of placement • Spreadmark Certi ed Contact us today!
