Inset: Ross and wife Jo with the Laurie Maber award Karen Phelps Power Farming Timaru punches well above its weight nationally with a history of taking out accolades every year at the group’s annual awards. Owner Ross Dawbin was recently named the 2021 Laurie Maber trophy recipient and took out the silver award for tractor salesperson of the year for all of New Zealand. This comes on the back of winning silver in tractor sales and silver in machinery sales in 2020, named top new tractor salesperson in 2019, used salesperson of the year in 2018 and taking home silver for tractor sales and salesperson of the year and in 2017 winning the tractor salesperson of the year title. Ross, who started at Power Farming as an apprentice when he left school at 15, trained under Laurie so winning the trophy this year was especially signi cant. I t is given to a person who embodies all that Power Farming strives to be and who has given long service to the company. “It was pretty humbling to win that award because Laurie and the Maber family are stalwarts of the tractor industry in New Zealand and I’m where I am today because of the opportunities they’ve given me.” But Ross is quick to stress that the awards are due to the effort of the whole Power Farming Timaru team. “I can’t achieve these awards without the support of our team, including my wife Jo who is company co-director and of ce manager. Everything comes back to a team effort and the backup and support from my service team. We’ve built up a good customer base and have great rapport with clients. It’s not just about the initial sale - it’s the after sales service and support that keeps people coming back again and again.” Ross says the Power Farming Timaru spare parts department is one of the top in the country and the service department has previously been named service department of the year in the Power Farming annual awards. “We have a great team culture here. It’s like a family and everyone wants to strive to get better. Of the 21 staff 9 or 10 have been here for over 10 years. I’m proud we’ve got such loyal and long serving staff, including people who have come out of school and done their apprenticeships here and stayed. “It’s abut giving opportunities to people and I’m really proud of that.” Power Farming Timaru has operated from its purpose built showroom, warehouse and of ces in Washdyke since 2004 and services a wide area from the Rangitata River down to Palmerston and inland to the Mackenzie Country. Ross, an ex mechanic who grew up on a farm, became branch manager at Power Farming Timaru in early 2007 after working for many years for the company previously. In April 2008, he and wife Jo invested in a 50 per cent shareholding in the business. Power Farming New Zealand is the biggest agricultural wholesaler in Australasia. Ross says a key advantage for his customers is the backing and support of the Power Farming Group. For example Power Farming Timaru’s full product range RURAL SERVICES » Power Farming Timaru is supported by a strong team of technical service managers that provide service backup and assistance, service training and warranty administration. Technicians are available on a 24 hour / 7 days a week basis and are supported by six personnel based at head of ce who offer over 150 years of knowledge and experience. “At Power Farming Timaru we also have access to all stock held in New Zealand or Australia with over 100,000 line items electronically linked and spread across the Australasian warehouses,” explains Ross. “We service a good mix of other farming sectors such as cropping, sheep and beef, deer and horticulture. Service is a key thing and with my background as a mechanic I know this must be an important focus for Power Farming Timaru.” Brands sold by Power Farming Timaru include Deutz-Fahr, Kverneland, McHale, Kioti Tractors, Merlo Telehandlers, Jaylor mixer wagons, McIntosh silage wagons and bale feeders and Fence Pro Post drivers. The company also turns over a signi cant number of used tractors and farm machinery. As of January Power Farming took over the JCB Construction franchise for New Zealand, which has given Power Farming customers even more options. Ross says the range has been popular and, at times, sold out. But new stock is arriving constantly and people can head into Power Farming Timaru to take a look.
