96 | Safe spraying delivered with precision SVCO proactively invests to buy a new truck every three years. Kim Newth Equipped with a modern eet of boom spray and hand spray gun trucks, Southern Vegetation Control Otago (SVCO) offers fast and effective spray services to farmers across South Otago. SVCO Business Manager Benji Perry says the team does everything from spray work on dairy farms through to spraying around water courses in preparation for riparian planting. Through the winter, SVCO has been weed spraying Lucerne stands for clients as well as conducting maintenance on eet and equipment to ensure everything is in perfect working order for the coming season. “From early August we’ll be spraying ProGibb [a natural pasture growth stimulant] and liquid urea to help promote early spring growth. More and more farmers are asking that both be used together as they’re such a good t.” SVCO proactively invests to buy a new truck every three years. Benji says each spends two years as a boom truck before going into service as a gorse truck equipped with hand spray gear. After three years, trucks are then moved on and sold. “The goal is to make sure our current trucks are as up-to-date and reliable as possible and to keep any repairs to a minimum. We have three boom trucks with 16-metre booms that cover the big hectares, doing jobs like spraying oats, applying ProGibb and crop spraying.” Most farmers don’t opt to do their own spraying today when they know they can rely on skilled professional contractors like SVCO. Precision spraying with SVCO means farmer clients are not having to pay for any unnecessary litres, which is particularly important in today’s in ationary environment. Benji says proof of placement is also becoming increasingly important with the rise of farm environment plans. “We have precision agriculture units in all our trucks that track everywhere that the truck has been and where it has sprayed and in what weather conditions. That’s all in the Cloud and available for the farmer so they can see exactly what has gone on, when and where. “Farmers really do appreciate the level of precision we deliver. Each truck is kitted out with the proper gear so there’s no overlap. They’re all equipped with GPS and follow the lines they’re meant to be running. Flow rates adjust automatically so everything goes on in the right amounts exactly where it’s meant to go. RURAL SERVICES » Southern Vegetation Control Ltd SVCO’s operators are all approved handlers and GrowSafe accredited, with safe practice a big part of training. With trucks that are also equipped with spray drift controls and a team that understands safety and the growing environmental focus in agriculture, SVCO is well-equipped to meet farmers needs in the region well into the future. As well, SVCO’s partner company Central Seed and Chemicals provides associated agronomy services to give clients the whole package. Benji says the focus is on supplying clients with advice alongside seed and chemical product. He notes that having the right guidance for crops like fodder beet is essential. Central Seed and Chemicals uses a Cloud-based AgWorld farm information system that can generate spray recommendations for both the farmer and SVCO, with any products used then recorded and tracked.
