OCTOBER 3RD. 1PM. 2024 40 YEARLING BULLS www.kakahuangus.com Tom. 0276923451 “They are all performance recorded, we carcass scan them in September so all their data is in the figures that are presented in the sale catalogue. They are also semen tested prior to the sale and fully vaccinated, so they are ready to go.” The scanning has revealed evenness of fat cover and good eye muscle area and intramuscular fat. Torrisdale covers 170 hectares, with the stud operating under commercial conditions on 120ha, while 50ha is leased. The stud winters about 330 cattle comprising 160 breeding cows, 160 yearling bulls and heifers, plus herd sires. Barry grows whole crop silage for wintering the cows on, along with some fodder beet for the bulls this year. “This is the first year of wintering my heifers just on grass and baleage.” In previous years the yearlings were fed fodder beet, but this became too expensive because of the cost of the seed, cultivation and lifting. Barry is reasonably optimistic about the coming season. “It looks like beef [prices] has improved and the forecast going forward looks pretty good and it looks like lamb might be starting to may be turn the corner, and I think dairy farming looks to be pretty stable at the moment.” While the national herd is constant in terms of the total number of cattle, Barry is encouraged to see some younger Murray Grey breeders coming on board. “This bodes well for the future and things are looking bright for the breed.”
