Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Frame Grain and Seeds Culverden based Frame Grain & Seeds stands as a testament to the power of communitydriven business. For over seven decades the family-owned enterprise has been more than just a seed merchant; it’s been a cornerstone of local agricultural life, deeply rooted in the soil and soul of the region. “We’re not just here to sell seeds and provide services,” says Ben Frame, the current co-director and third generation to own the business. “We’re here to support our farmers, to be part of their successes and challenges. That’s been our family’s philosophy since my grandparents started this business in 1951.” This commitment to community has only strengthened since Ben and his wife Hayley took over in 2011. “When we stepped in, we knew we wanted to expand our services, but more importantly, we wanted to deepen our community connections,” Ben explains. “The addition of calf meal production for the dairy industry for example was as much about meeting local needs as it was about business growth.” The partnership with Simon and Jaimee Thorne in 2017 further solidified Frame Grain & Seeds’ position as a local agricultural pillar. “Our goal isn’t just to provide top-notch agricultural advice. It’s about being a true partner to our farmers, understanding their unique challenges, and being there for them year-round,” says Simon. The company’s commitment to the area is evident in its service range, covering from Kaikoura to Rangiora. “Our experience in the local area is crucial,” says Ben. “We’ve built relationships with families over generations. We know the land, the climate, and the specific challenges our farmers face.” This intimate knowledge allows Frame Grain & Seeds to offer personalised solutions. Whether it’s through its team of four agronomists providing scientific advice, its seed cleaning service, its custom seed mixing services, or its locally produced calf meal, every aspect of the business is tailored to meet the specific needs of South Island farmers. The company’s use of modern technology, like the Agworld programme, is always implemented with the local farmer in mind. “We embrace new technologies and methods,” Simon explains, “but always with the goal of making our farmers’ lives easier and their operations more efficient.” Frame Grain & Seeds’ impact on the community goes beyond agriculture. Frame Grain & Seeds is deeply involved in local initiatives, sponsoring rugby teams, supporting dog trials, and participating in various community events. “We are passionate about giving back to our local communities as much as we possibly can,” says Simon. “They support us, and we love to support them. It’s a two-way street. Our success is measured by the success of our farmers and the health of our community. That’s what drives us every day.”
