Kelly Deeks A year on from taking over ownership of Kings Mechanical’s four Southland workshops from DT Kings Transport, Craig and Abby Ward have added another, even longer-standing business to their remit with the leasing of the iconic Black’s Garage at Orawia. Craig and Abby were very grateful for the opportunity to have a go at running their own business when DT Kings Transport offered them the business where Craig had been working for more than 25 years. A huge learning curve for both Craig and Abby, who left her bank job to come and manage the Kings Mechanical office, the couple adjusted well and were soon looking for their next opportunity. “We really love being able to support our local community, using local businesses and sponsoring local events,” Abby says. “So when Les Black started hinting at retirement, we knew we could help to keep this local institution up and running for all of his valued customers.” Black’s Garage has been around for nearly a century and is part of the fabric of early Orawia. Maybe started in 1930 by John Black, and later joined by his brother Bill, many of Black’s Garage’s early days were spent repairing farm machinery and agricultural equipment in the midst of this farming district.
