Morris Contracting in Otautau celebrates 10 years in business next year and has grown from initially providing baleage production only to now include a wide range of ground cultivation services. Family owned and operated by Mike and Lenore Morris, this small team take their work and clients very personally and strive to provide the best possible results in a reasonable timeframe. “By focusing on experience, investment in equipment and an efficient response, we can deliver the best results for our clients, positively impacting their bottom lines,” Lenore says. Morris Contracting has cost savings to offer its clients, particularly during these tough economic times. With huge experience in baleage production, high quality and efficient feed is guaranteed with Morris Contracting’s tightly packed bales. “Tighter bales are more economical for the farmer as they get higher kgs of dry matter per bale and reduced cost with less bales on the ground.” Quality can be further enhanced with the use of Si-Lac fresh culture inoculant. This is often only added to whole crop baleage and silage but has benefits in grass baleage too. Bales with inoculant added are shown to have greater energy yields, more digestible protein, and greater dry matter yield. Morris Contracting now has two combination balers with film on film, an option which eliminates use of non-recyclable net. With Morris Contracting’s precision planter, farmers are achieving maximum crop yields. “Our six-row precision planter has been a really good investment,” Lenore says. “We see improved yields over air seeding and direct drilling as with the precision planter each row is independent with its own seed box and spring, meaning they follow uneven contours better with precise seed placement. The planter places seeds in the furrows which optimises water catchment through the drier summer months. More farmers are now planting swedes this way and seeing great results and with less input required over fodder beet.” As a small family business, each one of Morris Contracting’s clients is a valuable part of the operation. Mike and Lenore have an eye on every farm and the work they do there, and close relationships with a high level of understanding of each clients’ operation, goals, and requirements. “We try never to lose touch with our clients because each and every one of them is valuable to our business,” Lenore says. “We deal with every client personally and have open lines of communication. If someone has something they need done, we’ll make it happen.” WESTERN MECHANICAL SERVICES Qualified diesel mechanic, servicing Western Southland and surrounding areas.
