The programme, coupled with recent industry developments such as Farmlands’ acquisition of SealesWinslow, will see Farmlands position itself as the largest compound feed manufacturer in the country, offering farmers an unprecedented range of high-quality feed solutions, says Scott Saunders, head of manufacturing at Farmlands. “For farmers, the FeedSafeNZ logo on feed packaging provides a crucial assurance,” he says. “It signifies that the feed has been manufactured to the highest possible standards, meeting stringent quality and safety requirements. This certification is particularly valuable in today’s market, where consumers are increasingly concerned about the origins and quality of their food.” FeedSafeNZ was established to guarantee the quality of animal feed produced in New Zealand. The program involves comprehensive testing of ingredients and manufacturing processes, including annual on-site audits conducted by Asure Quality. These audits scrutinise every aspect of feed production, from ingredients and plant conditions to storage and operations. Scott says that the FeedSafeNZ program requires manufacturers to adhere to a comprehensive Code of Good Manufacturing Practice. This code covers a wide range of areas including building and plant design, hygiene, pest control, ingredient sourcing and record keeping. By following these guidelines, feed producers can minimise risks associated with feed contamination and ensure consistent quality. Aligning with these quality initiatives Farmlands recently announced its acquisition of Seales Winslow, the animal nutrition business previously owned by Ballance Agri-Nutrients. The acquisition brings together Farmlands’ existing feed businesses - NRM and McMillan - with Seales Winslow, expanding the co-op’s manufacturing capabilities and reach. “It gives us a national production footprint and enhanced buying power for raw materials,” says Scott citing two key benefits for customers. “There are now around 80 people employed nationally in the manufacturing side of the Farmlands business. We have manufacturing sites strategically located in Morrinsville, Whanganui, Rolleston, Ashburton and Winton giving us great geographical spread. This wide-reaching presence ensures that Farmlands can efficiently serve farmers across New Zealand, providing them with locally produced, top-quality feed.”He says the increased scale of operations is expected to improve efficiencies and potentially lead to better value for farmers, while maintaining the high- quality standards ensured by FeedSafeNZ certification. The acquisition also ensures that a critical aspect of the food production supply chain remains in the hands of New Zealand farmers and enables sourcing of raw ingredients from shareholders. “By keeping ownership of the feed mills within the co-operative, Farmlands is safeguarding the interests of local farmers and supporting rural communities.” Farmlands has its own product FeedSafeNZ guarantees the quality of animal feed produced in New Zealand. range and offers custom compound feed and a custom blending service. In all cases Scott says that Farmlands has a strong focus on innovation and customer-driven product development: “We have a strong product development team, delivering new and innovative products to the market. For example we have just released a grain-free calf feed option called Zero Grain 22%, developed specifically in partnership with customers to help them access grain-free markets in the USA.” Scott says that with FeedSafeNZ setting the standard and industry leaders like Farmlands expanding its capabilities, New Zealand’s animal feed industry is well- positioned to meet the evolving needs of farmers and contribute to the country’s reputation for high-quality agricultural products.
