Kim Newth Whether it’s for silage making, hay baling, general cartage or aggregate supply, farmers across Eastern Southland and West Otago know who to call - Peter Corcoran Contracting Limited. Peter has extensive local experience, stretching back to his childhood growing up on his family’s farm in Southland. Four years after starting his contracting career, Peter bought his uncle’s rural contracting business to launch Peter Corcoran Contracting Limited in 2001. “Having lived and worked in this area for a long time, I have a good understanding of the land, seasonal conditions, and what local farmers need,” says Peter, who is the third generation owner of his family’s original 142-ha farm at Waikaka. “We do sheep grazing, have our own ewes as well, plus grow oats for Harraways in Dunedin and do some cut and carry to fill orders.” The contracting depot is at Maitland, about 15km from Gore, where they stock aggregate and house their machinery, with aggregate sourced from the farm’s quarry at Waikaka. “We are pleased to have recently renewed the quarry consent for the next 25 years.” Since 2001, Peter Corcoran Contracting has kept pace with changing needs, servicing both dairy farmers and the local sheep and beef sector. Over the past five years, Peter has taken on a business partner, Mason Cairns, who previously worked for Peter for many seasons and is steeped in the local area. As well, the business employs another full-time staff member. “There are eight of us over the peak season, with some having done 10-12 seasons with us, plus two are usually UK imports to operate seasonal “There are eight of us over the peak season, with some having done 10-12 seasons with us, plus two are usually UK imports to operate seasonal machines.” RURAL SERVICES » Peter Corcoran Contracting machines.” Reliable machinery is a must in rural contracting. Peter Corcoran Contracting trades up their grass harvesting equipment – such as forage harvester and Swather gear – on a five-yearly basis. We have built up our stock of parts, so if something does break at a critical time we can quickly get back up and running again.” Their fleet includes JD 8300I forage harvester with KP & Greenstar & Harvest Lab and a 5m Zurn whole crop front for cereal silage; a collection of versatile tractors; two JCB wheel loaders; a fleet of four modern tip trucks including trailers and a 9.5m pintal hook low deck transport trailer; a Case SB531 conventional baler / mowers / rakes /v acuum tank / portable weighbridge / attachments for loaders, (for example, bale handling equipment); a Case 130C digger; a tractor tip trailer; and a fully set up workshop for equipment maintenance. “For us, silage harvesting gets into full swing from mid- to late October and runs to mid-March with an few tail end jobs into April. Haymaking starts at the end of January; we do around 10,000 bales a year using our conventional baler and we cart in most of them. We make round bales as well, using subcontractors for that. We buy and store feed too – it all helps to keep the wheels turning.” Contact Peter 027 431 8148, Mason 027 623 7440, or email petercorcorancontractingltd@outlook.com Stock Cartage, General Cartage & Fert Spreading Get in touch! admin@waikakatransport.com 032072885 TRANSPORT & GENERAL ENGINEERING Mobile Hydraulic Hose Repair Service 13 Waiau Street, Gore | Ph: 03 208 1773 | Mobile: 027 615 7719 For all Commercial, Agricultural, Car & 4WD Tyres.
