Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Renner Fencing Contractors Ltd Long-standing Marlborough fencing contractor firm Renner Fencing has more than 50 years of industry experience keeping the company competitive in the current market. Director Mike Renner says as the construction industry slows down, more builders are adding fencing to their repertoire leaving Renner Fencing to price against companies that aren’t fencing companies. “Competition is fierce,” he says. “I have to be aware when I’m pricing jobs of all the other people who are really trying to get that work as well. I’ve got to get my quotes out quickly.” But Renner Fencing does have a skills and reputation advantage above the building and construction companies it is now competing with for fencing work. Terry Renner started fencing around Marlborough in 1968, and his sons Brad and Mike have been involved in Renner Fencing for more than 30 years. They run the fencing and administration sides of the business respectively. From its base in Seddon, Renner Fencing’s work takes it from Nelson to Kaikoura and everywhere in between. Renner Fencing has always evolved with both the industry and the market, and is now working for the third generation of farmers, with Terry’s original customers’ sons and grandsons now running their family farms. The rural market is currently dead quiet and residential fencing is slow, still Renner Fencing has kept busy with a couple of recent vineyard development projects as the season starts up, and its security fencing which has been booming for the past several years. “That’s what’s keeping us going at the moment,” Mike says. “We are working on the development of landside infrastructure in Picton for KiwiRail’s iReX project, and for the Car Distribution Group we are fencing their Picton depot with a 33-wire pulse fence from Gallagher, which is a new experience for us.” This learning curve for the Renner Fencing crew was heightened by the fact Mike was in hospital with pneumonia when the project started. But Renner Fencing’s security crew has been perfecting their skills over the past few years and took the lead without any major problems. “It looks really good,” Mike says. “The boys left all the connections and controllers for me to do when I came back, and the Gallagher rep came to help with that as well.” The pulse fence, which acts as a deterrent to thieves targeting a huge stock of stored vehicles with keys inside, also alerts its owner if someone does try to enter their site. It is protected by a standard security fence at the front, then a concertina of razor wire behind that. “You would have to cut through the security fence, climb through the razor wire, and then get electrocuted “We are working on the development of landside infrastructure in Picton for KiwiRail’s iReX project, and for the Car Distribution Group we are fencing their Picton depot with a 33-wire pulse fence from Gallagher, which is a new experience for us.” KC Fence Systems are proud to support Renner Fencing. before you got in that site.” Renner Fencing is poised to resume service to its valued rural clients just as soon as they’re needed, and meanwhile Mike has a rural fencing job to price, although not on a farm. Currently under development, the new cycling and walking track the Whale Trail, which connects coastal communities between Picton and Kaikoura is now up to the stage connecting Marfells Beach Road and Ward, which needs 4.3km of rural fencing.
