Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » Tony Perriam Hedgecutting Southland business Tony Perriam Hedgecutting’s difference is that it is strongly family owned and operated, something that resonates with its rural clients, says owner Tony Perriam. With sons, James, Luke and Brock working in the business and wife Dianne taking on the administration side, it’s a business deeply rooted in family and in the rural communities in which it operates. “I didn’t expect my sons to be interested in the business, so it’s quite special they are now coming on board,” says Tony. “We can give our clients a really personal service. There is always a bit of banter and we focus on quality and delivering good service.” James, Luke, and Brock each bring unique skills to the table. Luke, an engineer, built the large saw that the team uses and handles all the engineering for the business. James, who also runs his own baleage and cultivation business, works part-time for Tony Perriam Hedgecutting. Brock is fully committed to the hedge cutting business, while another son, Liam, might be set to join the family enterprise soon. “Having my sons involved means we can offer our clients continuity,” Tony explains. “Our clients can have confidence they will have the next generation taking on this business and continuing our legacy of good service.” The business also employs another valued staff member Daniel Shuttleworth who cuts hedges and drives the saw machine. The family’s deep roots in farming add another layer of value for clients. Tony grew up on a sheep and grain farm in Southland and bought his own sheep farm at the age of 23. He no longer has that but now has shares in a dairy farm. “We understand the requirements of farmers,” he says. “This insight allows us to provide a service that’s tailored to their specific needs.” This understanding translates into practical benefits for clients. The company offers a comprehensive service - cut and clean up and traffic management when cutting on the side of the road - ensuring safety and efficiency. The family’s commitment to quality and personal service has fostered long-lasting relationships with clients, some spanning three generations on the same farms. “We’ve worked from granddad to dad to son on some farms,” Tony says proudly. “This longevity speaks to the trust our clients place in us.”The company’s equipment is a key aspect of the operation’s success. Three custom-built John Deere tractors, engineered by Becks Engineering at Edendale, form the backbone of their operation. This state-of-the-art machinery allows Tony Perriam Hedgecutting to cut hedges up to 18 metres high, catering to a wide range of client needs.
