Emma Bailey A passion for genetics has pushed Inch Clutha farmer Megan Morrison out of her comfort zone as she takes part in the Young Holstein Breeders Development Programme. Megan was accepted into the elite programme run by the Holstein Friesian NZ at the start of the year, the only one from the Southern regions. It is designed for young holstein friesian breeders who have their eye on leadership or governance roles and aimed at young breeders aged 20 to 35 years-old to help them develop skills outside of the show ring. All six participants are expected to participate in the full programme, a mixture of online and in-person workshops which finishes in December. The topics covered include the four pillars of governance and director responsibilities. The programme schedule includes monthly online workshops with key board members in the sector. Programme participants also attended another two-day session at the HFNZ annual meeting in Invercargill in June. “There are six of us on the programme, I’m the only one from the Otago and Southland area and there are two in Canterbury. They approached some of us to be on the programme. I saw it on Facebook and applied, I thought an opportunity like this doesn’t come along that often so I threw my hat in.” The participants will conclude the programme by delivering a presentation to the HFNZ board of directors in December. The 27-year-old believes when the programme ends in December, “the worlds your oyster.” “Come December I’m hoping to be confident to go onto a board in a governance position. It’s good to bring a female voice; we all think differently and bring different things to the table. “Especially having different ages from different locations, it so varied across New Zealand.” She manages her parents’ property Haswell Farm, a 180 hectares effective farm and this year milking 440 cows. “It has been a really good winter; the grass is slowly ticking over so it looks good coming into spring. Being a part of Holstein Friesian NZ (HFNZ) is relatively new in the family operation, which consists of three farms on Inch Clutha “Mum and Dad have always had Friesian stock, but my brother Brendan and I have only recently registered with HFNZ.” Proud to support Megan Morrison - Haswell Dairy FOR ALL YOUR DOMESTIC, COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL REQUIREMENTS Experienced Electricians providing dairy shed maintenance, rebuilds and conversions 03 418 2762 | accounts@mcelrea.co.nz MILLER STOCKFOOD LTD 304 Fleming Road, RD3, Balclutha, NZ E: millerstockfoodltd@gmail.com P: 027 260 1070 Barley Wheat Free Range Mash Pig Meal Calf Blend Bulk DDG, PKE grain mix Available in 25kg bagged blends or bulk mixes for dairy farmers Proud suppliers to Megan Morrison - Haswell Dairy BOTTING BROS.
